Having painted up the Consular Guard Grenadiers last month I have finally finished the Chasseurs. I had a choice as to whether to paint the turn backs white or red, I have seen the Consular Guard in both colours but I went for red because I will use the unit for the later period as well by swapping the flags about.
Anyway here they are:

You had me there. I was expecting 1,800 painted Chasseurs.

Nice one, by the way.

Nice.
A little too pristine for a force that's marched over the Swiss Alps perhaps.
Interesting effect on the bearskins- is that a painted effect or just excessive flash lighting -reflection on them?
cheers d
PS- What sources show white turnbacks?
I've noted that red turnbacks and 'aurore' lace appeared really early in place of scarlet on the 'Guides' and follow on corps.

Thanks guys, the French 'guard' troops of this period went through numerous changes, Gardes l'Assemblee National; Garde de la Convention; Garde du Corps Legislatif in 1795; Garde du Directiore and finally the Garde Consulaire.
A few examples could be quoted but have a look at Ospray Napoleon's Guard (1) pg17. It gives a run down of the uniforms of the above and states that the uniform (with white facings) was retained until 1801.
Historie and Collections The battle of Marengo however shows them in red turn backs for the battle. Of course they do also show all of the Austrian infantry in helmets when (as they were introduced that year) the vast majority of the Austrians would have still retained the Casquet for this battle as the helmet would not yet have reached the front line troops.
Bearskins are dry brushed grey but the light does reflect a bit. Agree with the pristine comment but hey my lads tart up well!
Cheers,
Dave.
P.S. 1,800 figures, yeh right!
