I am asking those more knowledgable if they have any descriptions of the actual Guilford courthouse building. What I have been able to locate are two conflicting descriptions: One was a "plain-sided building" and the other was "a rough log building". Also, I have references as to it being rectangular with an attached "outbuilding to the rear" and "rectangular with a wing" on one end. Any help or additional references will be appreciated. TIA, Dave |

If the walls were split logs faced "smooth" side outward with filler in the gaps it would satisfy both of your descriptions. |

Keith Rocco did a painting that included what his research suggested it looked like: link |

Yeah, it was probably pretty rough. You might want to call the park to speak to the park historian too. |

Thanks to all who responded. While no definitive description was available it appears the original courthouse was a of faced log construction and was raised off the ground by wood piers. This last from the pdf linked by Bill N. It also appears when the new courthouse was built the logs from the original were dismantled and used in a portion of the construction of the new one. No mentioon on outbuildings, attached or unattached, was made, not any layout other than rectangular. |
