The author's diary entry mentions his location as Auchonvillers (pronounced 'Ocean Villas' by the Tommies) and also refers to Mailly. This places him in the area of the attack on Beaumont Hamel, where the Newfoundlanders lost the largest proportion of men during the attack that day. The situation was different further south and in the French sector of the attack. Robert |
