most of the photos of this ship shows arado 196 as seaplane carried ,but i have seen one photo of a bi-plane on catapult (before 196 entered service?) anyone tell me what aircraft this was and what would be the color scheme of this aircraft? |

That would be the Heinkel He60. Paint scheme would depend on the year, but most common would be the pre-war over-all gray scheme. For hostilities, it would have been painted similarly the Ar196. |

It could also have been the sesquiwing Heinkel He 114, which was in service for a short period around 1939-1940. |

I thought all the German warships that had spotter planes during WW2 carried the Adaro 196. |

It appears that the Ar-196 did not come into service until Nov 1938, so earlier pictures of Gneisenau from 1936 – 1938 would have the He-60 (more likely) or maybe the ill-fated He-114. See link for some more details about the development of the Ar-196. He-60: link He-114: link Jim |
