Russ,
Actually it was 21 January '68 that the "siege" started.
That was the day we were hit with estimated 1250 artillery/rocket, etc rounds and the ammo dump took a direct hit cooking off rounds and adding to it. That was the beginning of the 77 days.

An aside, many people are unaware that we suffered more casualties during the hill fights in 67 than during the actual battle in 68. Another overlooked fact. That base was first occupied in 1962. From that date, the base was occupied, abandoned, destroyed, rebuilt, etc several times. Not sure of the last date the base was used, but it was well after 1973.
From beginning to end there were an estimated 10,000 US and South Vietnamese casualties. If anyone wants to question, that info comes from
Ray Stubbe, regimental chaplain of the 26th. He has written several books and articles regarding Khe Sanh, most well known was Valley of Decision written with John Prados.

Bismarck,

I am so glad to see you back on this forum.

The respect we all have, for you chaps who were on the receiving end…..in the UK, as a schoolkid, I dashed home every night to watch the news from Khe Sanh on our BBC. I feared another Dien Bien Phu and when Tet happened….I thought that is it.

and I did find your picture of an M14 fired from a second story window in Hue….but it took a long time.

Thanks for your service (I was lucky)

Thanks Bismarck, great information.

Thank you very much for your service. I am the son of a three war vet.
WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. I hold all that served in very high esteem.

The Tet started on the 30th.

TXWargamer,

It was not uncommon to see mustang or field grade and above officers and senior NCOs who had fought both in WW2 and Korea.
Their leadership and guidance kept a lot of us alive during Vietnam. My greatest respects and thanks to your Dad and those others who fought in all three conflicts.

regards,

Sam

oh….forgot to add….Russ, I was talking about the beginning of the battle at Khe Sanh. The 30th was indeed the start of Tet '68.
The year of the Monkey.

Thanks Bismarck, it means a lot and I was not expecting this post to make me think of my dad but he was the best dad despite all he was part of for the country. I'm a very proud son.
