OK, I know of Space 1889 and my own The Hive and the Flame. All's Quiet on the Martian Front doesn't include anything exotic, historical early aeroplanes are the human weapons. I recall When the Navy Walked. Is there a Barsoom airship game out? I know Leviathans has large ships and so did Dystopian Wars and Aeronefs.

Am I missing any?

Imperial Skies:

I normally stock them at ScaleCreep.com but am sold out just now…

The GASLIGHT Compendium has rules for "fleet battles" with lots of these ships as well as skirmish action involving just one or two.

Brigade Models has PDF versions of the "Aeronef" rules. David Manley had expansions online for fixed wing aircraft and naval ships. link

Not quite an answer to the OP question, but a thought:

VSF skyships are pretty much modeled on pre-dreadnoughts or ironclads, so you could probably start with a relatively simple set of naval rules and just add some house rules to resolve elevation issues.

Some suggestions, in what I would consider order of suitability:

I'm sure I could think of others with time.

Another thought: FAI includes rules for WWI dirigibles and fixed-wing aircraft, which might be a big help.

Following thread myself, got some 6mm airships coming in the mail from Turkey and am going to need some rules. link

You can still find Dystopian Wars 2.5 online: Covers floating ships of all kinds including Zeppelins, aerostats and various lifting types quite well with solid game differences between types.

Terry, I'm a bit confused as to what you are saying about Space 1889. Sky Galleons of Mars focused on various anti-grav, but the main RPG included rotor-lift craft for the Germans.

anything exotic, historical early aeroplanes are the human weapons

Wessex's Aeronef has small fixed-wing craft flown from their larger ships, which I think was passed on to Imperial Skies as well. Used the same Brigade Models models. (I know it's wrong for me to enjoying saying that so much.)

Sorry, I DID say I was confused…

Doug

PS "main RPG included" maybe Ironclads and (A)ether Flyers.

Beast, there was a period in there. The sentence you quote is "All's Quiet on the Martian Front doesn't include anything exotic, historical early aeroplanes are the human weapons." So yes, Space 1889 and The Hive and the Flame both have anti-gravity flyers. I was ruling out All's Quiet on the Martian Front, as having any exotics.

I'm asking the original question because I'll be presenting an Origin's War College talk on Close Air Support in a Victorian Science Fiction setting.

Sorry, Sir.

Aeronef and Imperial Skies are mostly based on on various (Negative gravity screw, R-matter) for anti-grav fliers versus various digs. While both have the small fighters and bombers, as well as having bombs available on larger craft, I don't recall any indicating close support.

I know I've played some 'air cav' with troopers on winged beasts and using shooters basically as 'close air', but don't recall any I didn't have to make my own variant rules.

Soldier's Companion for Space 1889 and The Hive and the Flame both have direct rules on aircraft vs ground units. I wanted to be inclusive for games that were out there.

I try and make my talks at Origins "rules agnostic" whenever possible.

Thanks!

Have but never played Soldier's Companion; I'll have to give it a look to see if jogs my mind on any others.

By 'agnostic', I'm right that, not no rules, but as many as possible to be inclusive?

I try and write from the "real world" or at least basic mechanics of the universe, not the game mechanics. What does a 2,000 pound bomb do to a company of infantry in open order in a forest? Not what does a bomb do to three stands of infantry in wooded terrain in rules system X.

Soldier's Companion is a solid set of rules. I like the ones I wrote better but I've played lots of games using both.
