I came across this interesting piece of artwork this morning. It appears to show Roman Velites (could be Allies too) armed with a (white) Thyreos in action against Pyrrhus. I was wondering if there is any other historical precedent for this or is it artistic license? OR, am I misinterpreting who the figures actually represent? It does provide a nice modeling change of pace for Republican army! link |

I think those are supposed to be Hastatii without the pectorale. Damon. |

Now that would certainly make more sense! I just noticed the greaves on the left legs which would seem to confirm your observation. Damn! I was looking forward to converting some Victrix Velites! Oh well, case solved! |

Did the Romans use Velites against Pyrrhus? I thought they where a latter development in response (possibly) to the wars against Pyrrhus. Weren't the earlier Roman skirmishers shieldless and armed with a long spear and javelin? |

Most army lists I have for Heraclea all list "Velites" at least for the Roman Legions. However those are all modern (ie not contemporary) sources. I don't have my Roman Republic book in front of me but I recall having a discussion on that topic about 10 years back. If I recall correctly someone pointed out the actual Velites would have started around 211BC and only Levies would have been used for skirmishing before that. I use the Victrix Republican and Allied minis for this period. To distinguish between Roman and Allied skirmishers I opted to arm the Romans with helmets and their Allies without just for artistic variation. Neither have shields as you pointed out. |

Yes, that illustration is an attempt at showing hastati vs. Epirote elephants. Osprey 283 Early Roman Armies Sekunda/Northwood/Hook The description states that the shield is based off of coins of the 280 bc period, but also mentioned the coin art may represent booty- a Gallic thureos? |
