for my miniature gaming, trying to figure out which turret models I should have. newsreel pics of Bulge clearly show Tiger II's with Henschel turret in action. which variants fought at Arnhem, Normandy, etc. thanks |

link I was going to write from memory the Porche turrets were first made but the Henschel was the production model and would have been correct ( it was 50 Porsche the rest Henschel) |

Only 50 were Porsche so I'd go with the other if it's that vital to you. |

TII(p) Normandy, Tiger II (h) with a few (p)Normandy survivors after Seine crossed/Arnhem. TII(h) Bulge. Both types in Germany. |

The P turrets were pretty much all in the 503rd Tiger Bn in Normandy and the handful of Tiger IIs issued to Panzer Lehr. As noted, they were almost entirely with H turrets later in the campaign. |

The Tiger II(P)s in Panzer Lehr were part of its attached Funklenk Company 316. It received the first 5 Tiger IIs ever made. Unsurprisingly these first 5 had "serious technical problems". There was concern that should these tanks be used in combat they would break down and be captured. So for security reasons the Tiger IIs were ordered to be returned to Germany and StuGs took their place in 316. 316 was subsequently detached from Panzer Lehr and so I think it highly unlikely that any Tiger II saw combat service with Panzer Lehr in Normandy. |

The Panzer Lehr ones had very distinctive turret markings and mainly appear in photos broken down surrounded by grinning GIs. See Wolfgang Schneider Tigers in Combat series. |

Yes, and because I knew that they were part of a Funklenk unit I researched them there instead of in Schneider. Turns out that turret no. 12 saw a tiny bit of action and they all ultimately broke down and were abandoned. I have the Dragon pre-paint of no. 12 and a quite attractive colour scheme it is too. Ignoring the fact that the control tanks would all have broken down, 316 would make an interesting unit to game with. |
