The story is far better than suggested. There was many a mini Dunkirk and indeed the remaining BEF was actually reinforced in the reverse direction. Everyone knows the SS Lancastria tragedy, well after 51st HD captured.

Albeit the "skillful" withdrawal could be considered a "victory" so to speak. But all the BEF's equipment had to be abandoned, many lives lost. Especially with the troops holding off the attackers while others escaped. The detachment left in contact is one mission you don't want to get. Many of them became POWs or worse – dead.
