,,, using M101 105mm towed gun

"Vietnam has developed a wheeled self-propelled howitzer based on Russian truck and US-made M101 105mm towed howitzer mounted a the rear of Ural-375D truck chassis. Today, many armies in the world make the choice to use wheeled self-propelled howitzer to replace towed and tracked artillery weapon systems…"

I wonder how the artillery section deployed in regards to time to set up or break down when compared to towed or tracked.

That seems so top-heavy! And trucks probably have to stay on good roads?

Howitzer trucks are all the rage. The French are replacing their tracked SPHs with truck mounted ones (Ceasar).

Along with giant APCs/IFVs ala Boxer, I don't get the logic.

Could it be because truck mounted is cheaper?

FatherOfAllLogic28 Jan 2020 7:41 a.m. PST

Cheaper and less fiddly in the field?

Wheels are traditionally understood to be cheaper than tracks – and a number of those on this board who've served in mechanised forces have personally attested to track maintenance being less than straightforward (and fun).

Though in the above case I wonder if it's the best the indigenous industry can manage? And its clearly away of breathing some new life in to an old system.

I understand the cheapness and ease of maintenance but is there a loss in off road performance with wheels?

How long are all those automotive systems and parts going to hold up under the recoil/shock of repeated 105mm fire? Must work ok (?) but maintenance being what it is(or actually isn't), hate to get caught short when its time to bug out "Di Di Moa"!!!
