Most of the F&IW combatants wore leggings or high boots to protect their legs from vegetation, briars, etc. You don't see much evidence of these being used in the AWI or War of 1812. Were trousers considered protection enough for these later troops? The trousers would seem to provide a lesser degree of protection, IMO. |

I rather think it was just that military fashions had changed, with breeches and leggings replaced with trousers and boots. |

Putties give fairly good protection. I would say equal to high boots.

No. The British used them, I believe, from service in India. In the Napoleonic period, gaiters were worn on the lower leg, either 'grande gaiters' that came up to over the knee, shorter gaiters that came up to just under the knee, or shorter gaiters worn with trousers that came to just above the ankle, similar to those worn during the War of the Revolution. |
