Having just checked Khurasan's website, I was rather pleased to discover that they have added something new. It seems to be an early Italian Wars range. The photos of the figures look marvelous (the French artillery!!) I haven't been this stoked about Italian Wars miniatures since the Venexia range came out some years ago.

Since I always try to collect miniatures from various makers for each period of interest these will be an essential addition. I'm hoping they are quite compatible size-wise with what I have, I can't tell from the photos.

They do look nice.

I'd love to know how they compare size-wise with other offerings from Venexia, Essex, and MinFigs.

Hi Thresher01,

I agree, it would be nice to know more about size. My theory is they will be about the size of larger 15mm Minifigs, but perhaps smaller than Vanexia. I say this because the of these comments I read on Facebook at the Khurasan page:

Question – "Is this range on a par size wise as the Late 16th Century range that are listed as "larger 15''s". Or more like say the Ottomans. Thanks."

Khurasan's answer – "Those ranges that you mention are all the same size more or less."

Since I'm familiar with the Ottomans, which are only a little taller or about the same as some Minifigs, and I think the questioner might have been referring to the Thirty Years War range which are listed on the Khurasan website:

"The models are made in a large 15mm style so that they may mix with many of the popular ECW and TYW lines currently available."

There is no such official wording for the Late 16th Century range. That range was designed by Clibinarium and he is rather consistant in size, I believe. Here's a link to my size review here at TMP featuring Clibinarium's (Khurasan's) Late 17th Century range.

That said, I'm not sure who designed the new Italian Wars figures. They don't look like Clibinariun's work but I could be wrong.

They'd compliment the Old Glory range of Swiss & Landschnekts well.

If they are large like the 14th century range then they are indeed very large – bigger than the Venexia and Old Glory figures I have.

I have examples of Khurasan Ottomans and since they were mentioned as being similar size-wise to the new Italian Wars range, I thought a quick side-by-side comparison would be in order. I've included Khurasan, Venexia, Minifigs (both generation 2 and 3) and Asgard.

You'll notice that the Khurasan Ottomans are smaller than the Asgard and the Venexia miniatures, closer in size to the Minifigs. I can only hope that the same is true for the new Italian Wars figures. I will have to order a few to find out for sure but I am encouraged.

I took some comparison pictures, albeit of poor quality. Khurasan foot figures are thinner, but in my opinion compatible with Venexia and OG15s. Blue Moon are far too large to fit in with Khursan.

(Left to Right: Museum, OG15s, Khurasan, Venexia, Khurasan, Blue Moon) The Khurasan miniature second from the right appears much smaller, but that has to do with the pose.

The Khurasan gendarmes a somewhat taller than the Venexia. The horses are thinner and taller than Venexia. The riders appear similar in size.

Just ordered a couple of sets including knights. When they arrive I will put up some photos.

How would these Italian Wars Khurasan figures compare with Essex miniatures?

Gallocelt12 Aug 2021 8:59 p.m. PST

Hello battle master,

I only ordered an artillery piece with crew from the Italian Wars Khurasan range. I can't really tell much from the few figures but my initial impression is that they are tall for 15s, more like 18s. Beautifully sculpted, though. I have some renaissance Essex 15s. The Khurasan figures (at least the few I ordered) were noticeably taller.

Cheers!
