I'm preparing river sections for a game at Cold Wars 2020, so I decided to photograph the process with a tutorial. You may read the work in progress at the Command Decision forum site. link |

I like that, good idea. I'll try to emulate your idea. |

Old School guys sometimes used blue chalk. Draw it and rub it out for the next game. |

About an inch or so above/below the joints, sprinkle with a very little caulk and white highlights. Instant rapids/pebble beds that should break up the solid line of the joint. And that is a good idea and implementation. |

Also, I was thinking of a bit of lichen or a tree at the water's edge, where the bank doesn't quite reach the next section of bank. If I have time and feel really industrious, I'll make one section that has a ford (there was one across the Rio Grande at Peralta). |

I have made a ford and will post it on the Command Decision forum site once I have photos of that as well as of the finished river sections (I lost count of the number of coats of Mod-Podge on those!) |

@JimDuncanUK… and some of us old school (and just plain old) guys used various blue chalks on fabric and then fixed the chalk with hairspray or artists fixative so the river was ready to go the next time we played the scenario. Easy to drop in a few pebbles at any point along a chalk feature to delineate a ford… and then pick the pebbles up at game's end and save them for next go-round. Come to think of it, we used multiple colors of chalk for quite a few effects. |

Photos of some completed river sections and the ford can now be seen at the Command Decision Forum website under "Flexible Rivers". link |

Come to think of it, we used multiple colors of chalk for quite a few effects. Before we moved house, I had an old ping pong (table tennis) table on which chalk was very convenient to use. Among other things, I sketched hexagonal spaces on it so as to set up table-top Volley and Bayonet battles from hex campaign maps. Some interesting ACW battles in northern Georgia resulted from that. I have also used pebbles to demarcate a brook that was so narrow it didn't even merit any blue! |
