US intercession in the North Korean invasion of the South during 1950 was not a foregone conclusion. The US had not interceded in China, and there was (albeit brief) initial debate as to whether or not it was worth risking war with the Soviet Union and China by invading to help the South Koreans.

What if the US had decided NOT to intercede and remain only within Japan? One obvious ramification would be that Korea would have been entirely under the yoke of Kim Il-sung. But would have been the greater ramifications?

Would China and the Soviets have been more emboldened to take other actions elsewhere? Would Chinese and Soviet competition have been accelerated resulting in conflict between them?

I think this is a what if that doesn't get much consideration and might have had a major impact on current world affairs.

What do you think?

South Korea would look like North Korea. Everyone will be slim, trim, scared, starving and hopeless.

Truman would probably have been impeached

MacArthur and McCarthy go for the presidency –

Nuclear War 1952

No coincidence that the Soviets exploded their first Abomb in 1949 and Korea was invaded in 1950

Taiwan would have been the next to fall, followed by Hong Kong. A quicker ousting of the French from Indochina. It also would have ramifications in Europe as the Soviets would have been emboldened. Raises questions about difficulties in the Mid-east. It would just speed some things up until a group of nations (or the UN) decided to stand up and say no more.

There would be 1 Korean under the North. Like what happened in Vietnam.

South Korea would look like North Korea. Everyone will be slim, trim, scared, starving and hopeless.
Yep ! One big gulag under an extremely corrupt criminal leadership. As it is 40% of the North are starving, living in sub-standard conditions, etc.

As far as China or even the USSR invading Taiwan, they didn't have the amphib capabilities then or now. The nations that border the PRC or Russia are the only ones who may need to be concerned.

Chances of the PRC or USSR going to war at that or even Russia now would be very small. But if they did it would have been a blood bath.
