I don't have time to watch it right now, but when the narrator mentioned Michael Donahue in the very beginning, that is a great recommendation, assuming the producers paid attention to him.

Mike has been a ranger at the Battlefield for many, many summers and has written two excellent award winning books, Drawing Battle Lines, dealing with maps of the battle by white men and Indians, and his more recent Where the Rivers Ran Red. The latter is an outstanding book covering all of Custer's Indian encounters, but mostly the Little Big Horn. The book picks out the common planning concepts applied in all of the situations and how they worked.

With The Rivers Ran Red, Mike takes himself beyond the usual popular histories we have seen lately. The greatest number of the other authors have taken the Little Big Horn as an isolated incident with very little knowledge either of Custer's other encounters with the Indians or the broader scope of the conflicts with the Sioux and Cheyenne.

I am anxious to get the time to watch this. I hope I am not disappointed. The makers of this video had an excellent opportunity with access to Mike. I can only hope they had enough sense to realize it and not screw the whole thing up which happens so often with this battle.

I'm no expert, however as an enthusiast I think they did a superb job on fairly assessing Custer's motives and Mike's claims on why Custer became embroiled in THE LBH are spot on.

Likewise the dramatic re-enactment is very well done with good acting all round.

A great documentary and one well worth watching.

Many thanks Armand
