How about you? Have you looked at your life expectancy, and has it caused you to change your gaming hobby goals?

A) No, I'm too young (mentally, at least) to worry about such things!

B) No, even though I am advancing into middle-age to elderly status, I don't care/can't be bothered.

C) Meh! Pretty much sums it all up, succinctly, for me.

D) Yes, I need to figure it out… Soon. Maybe. (Founding member of Procrastinators-R-Us)

E) Yes, I am figuring it out now.

F) Egad, YES! This is changing my way of gaming, immensely!

G) Yep! I've re-aligned my gaming goals and projects already, been in this mode for many years, already… (Founding member of the Git-er-Done-Young-Gun group)

H) Age is irrelevant, and I just don't care/can't be bothered.

I would say that I am at a solid E, right now. I am focusing on what I need to paint, so I can play with them, before I die. I do not want any of my toys to be dumped (likely in the garbage, as opposed to being given to gaming friends -- they're all about my age!), without ever seeing table time. I bought them to play with, and I am seriously planning to do just that, with every gaming figure I currently own! Cheers!

E. I've already sold a couple collections and have a couple more that are looking for new homes. The hardest to part with will be the 54mm-60mm Conte-TSSD complete Alamo and figures. I'm playing more board wargames than miniatures and those miniatures games I am playing are smaller and less ambitious. Haven't bought any new figures for a while and have no plans to do so. The hobby room has been drastically downsized and is now shared with my wife and her hobbies.

First off 68 is the new middle age so I'm not there yet. This year I'm not starting any new projects yet. I am trying to organize my figures better so my heirs can maximize their inheritance when they dump my figures into to what by then will be a saturated market.

E/H I am figuring it out now that I just don't care/can't be bothered.

F. Liquidating some collections. Deciding what is going next.

G. Selling off armies at a rate of two or three perod/scales a year. Have been since I was 63 (2015) and it should take me about three more years to finish the process. In the meantime, the "keeper" armies are being finished up--needed units purchased and purchased castings painted. The goal is to get down to what my son can load into a van and take to a store, gamer or convention in one trip. Now if I could find a few more opponents…

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP17 Jan 2020 4:54 p.m. PST

E for me. I went from ‘I will keep all of this until I die!' To ‘That is a ridiculous amount of stuff- time to focus' in about a year. I sold a whole lot of stuff last year and you'd not even notice a dip in the stuff on my shelves. I will continue paring down to just the stuff I play and will definitely, absolutely get to (probably…maybe).

Maybe I'm more D/E?

Just now, I'm taking a break from cleaning out my gaming room to see what is happening on TMP. I'm finding lots of things I didn't know I had, or didn't know I had so many of. Like the 20mm SCW figures I haven't worked on painting for 20 years or so. I'm thinking keep the painted, sell the unpainted. Or the Pictish army that goes with the sub-Roman Britons and Anglo-Saxons, none of which are painted.
In 2006, I started thinking about the issue, and making a list of things I wanted to get done. Much of that hasn't happened or has been scoped down. Looking over the list, some of them were clearly a brief flash of an idea, gone within a few days, like doing gladiators. Others, I'd still like to do, maybe as a skirmish game, like the Sepoy Rebellion.
So, I guess E, with just a touch of D.

G). Since returning to the hobby after a 10 year hiatus I am being very selective as to my purchases and keeping to just 2 scales 6mm and 25mm. Beyond that just a few odds and ends to complete what I need for a scenario or system, but always willing to look at a sale.

F getting rid (slowly) of excess lead/plastic pile & curtailing purchases. As for 68 being the new middle age…my body must have missed the memo.

Now I am almost 70, I am gradually downsizing the number of collections I have as well as consolidating (i.e. properly organising) the others.

I am also tending towards wargaming on a smaller tabletop with simpler rules.

khanscom18 Jan 2020 6:28 p.m. PST

C-- any of us may be figuratively struck by lightning in the next 2 minutes, so do what feels right. If I don't complete a project, I've had fun with it in the meantime-- after that it's someone else's problem.

Bigby Wolf18 Jan 2020 6:31 p.m. PST

We need an option "I" for IMMORTAL – dunno 'bout you guys, but I have absolutely no plans on dieing!

Howler18 Jan 2020 8:35 p.m. PST

Yes indeed. Not getting into new games/periods and thinking what to do with my treasures when I'm gone. Wife plans to throw it on the curb the day after. Friends say they'll be there waiting at sun up.

Probably less painting and more playing which I thought would happen long ago.

mckrok Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2020 8:41 a.m. PST

I recently decided to out-source some of my painting, something I never intended to do because the painting is a big part of the hobby for me. I realize I only paint so fast, have lots of figures I want painted and to game with, money isn't an issue, and time is our precious resource.

I am on a quest to get all my models painted before I get recalled to the Mothership. I just turned 63 … so I could go anytime ! huh?

The Tin Dictator19 Jan 2020 10:09 p.m. PST

Its common knowledge that as long as you have an unpainted dead-lead pile you won't die. So, I fail to see an issue.

I figure I'm still at basic age.

Sgt Slag30 Jul 2021 2:31 p.m. PST

Sad note to add to this topic, which will run as a poll, tomorrow.

Actuaries: "Actuaries use mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to analyze the financial costs of risk and uncertainty." In other words, they calculate tables of life-expectancy, used by life insurance companies, and employers who still have pension funds to manage for their retirees, and soon-to-be retirees. They calculate when the average person will die, so companies can keep just enough money in the Pension Fund, to meet the needs, and no more. The average person, in the USA, dies within five years of retiring from work. Sad, but true.

I am actually more of a G-man, sadly. I figure I have <20 years left to live, most likely. I have projects I am working on, which I have dreamed of doing, since High School, some 40 years ago. Age really does have an effect on many of us, in our outlook on life. Others, not so much. Our attitudes, sadly, will have little effect in changing the facts of life expectancy…

Back in college, I came up with a motto I have lived by ever since: "Life is short -- make it sweet!" Cheers!

von Schwartz ver 230 Jul 2021 4:07 p.m. PST

Legion…you're still a pup at 63.
And now a few random thoughts re: aging, from the desk of "von Schwartz"

Remember everyone, growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

Getting old ain't fer sissies.

Its not easy getting old….but it sure as hell beats the alternative!!

And Finally
Never pick a fight with an old man, if he doesn't think he can win, he'll just shoot you.

And now everyone, pick your favorite adult beverage and we'll all repeat the Irish toast:
"May ye be at the Gates of Heaven a half an hour before the Devil knows yer dead."

CHEERS!!!!!

My wife and I have given our house to our children, bought a much cheaper house in Wales with our savings and have moved there, leaving most of the furniture to our children to keep/sell/give away as they please.
Before moving I downsized my military book collection by about 250 volumes and may well reduce the remaining books still further.
Several years ago I decided to wargame with only 10mm figures painted as early 19th century Imaginations (so no need for uniform books/plates), using simple rules such as Bob Cordery's Portable Wargame series or similar, or written by myself. I invested in enough Hexon II terrain to cover an area about 4 feet square.
Much less to worry about, no lead pile and no projects languishing in cupboards. My armies and rules can be divided into small forces to be shared amongst any future grandchildren when I'm gone.
