So after completing the Khartoum game for Fall In 2019, I am now looking at my next project.
I settled on Adowa 1896 and over Christmas I have managed to collect figures for the Italians and the Ethiopians.
Looks like the figure count will be 300 and 1200 respectively and using 1/72 or 20mm scale.
I will be using Spearpoints and Bayonets for the rules.
I was looking at the map and have decided to split it into two tables, which will be the sculpted terrain boards again with each being a 6ft x 12ft. This will help fight multiple separated battles, and remove the commanders from talking to one another as was the case historically. I am thinking that I need 10 players to fight this battle, and that's the problem. Except for the Saturday night numbers at Fall In, I didn't see enough players for Khartoum. Are the days of the large convention game over? or is it a case of planning for a larger attended convention instead, such as Historicon or Origins.
Anyone interested in playing in this one?

I think this would be a great game for a big convention – we played it our local club and as one of the Italian players I had the pleasure of being mowed over

I for one would love to play that but I don't attend the East Coast conventions anymore. Good luck with it though.

I think that you will find a full table at Historicon.

I'd love to play in it but as others have noted, I don't attend the East Coast conventions, just too far and expensive. I'm sure you will be turning away players.

If you bring this to Historicon I will most definitely sign up for it if there is space.

What mix of 1/72 figures are you using?

Just an update guys.
1st and 3rd Italian Brigades are painted. About 180 figures so far. Starting on the 2nd Brigade this weekend and then onto the big Native Brigade. Setting the game up for a 1:50 scale with the Italian battalions at 8 to 10 figures. The Alpini at 12 figures and the Askari at 18 to 20 figures. Also some independent companies at 4 to 6 figures. The guns will represent batteries, and I have 6 guns plus 2 maxims painted so far. I have sent the Ethiopians out to be painted, nearly 1500 figures there. Project is moving along.

Major to answer your question. The French Marines from Red Box resemble the Italian metropolitan uniforms. I used the Alpini WW1 figures from Waterloo 1815 for the Alpini. Red box already had the Bersagleri. The Egyptian/Sudanese figures from Waterloo 1815 for the Askari, and some Hat miniatures, British colonial and German Shutztruppe, for command figures. Ethiopians and natives are Arab warriors and Dervish from Esci, Hat, and Waterloo 1815.

Will post some pictures of the finished units.

Just a quick update…
So with Historicon Cancelled, I hope to be able to bring this to Fall In for this year.
I have finished the four Italian brigades and now working on a few rear area troops along with supply wagons, mules, and limbered artillery. Should be around 340 figures when I'm done.
I have just received 1200 painted Ethiopian infantry from my friend Phillip Kearnan, of Outland Painting Service, so will start mounting those this weekend.I still need to add 200 cavalry to these.I am using the ESCI Mamelukes and Hat Numidian cavalry.

Adowa sounds like it will be a good convention game.

Do you have any pix of your Khartoum game, or a link to a blog etc.?

Harrier08 Jun 2020 12:40 p.m. PST

Let me just finish flocking the supply wagons and mule trains and I will post pictures of the Italian brigades "On the move".

Harrier, WOW, outstanding set up! Great figs and terrain. I like the historically correct Use of the berm rather than using city walls.

In order to post pics on TMP they must first be uploaded somewhere else on the web, like the photo site you linked. Then…
click on the online pic, copy pic, then paste into text box on TMP. But remember you can only post pics already posted online somewhere else.
