What rules do you think handle the very different way of fighting by the native warriors in the FIW period? Looking particularly at skirmish games.

Musket & Tomahawks. Hard to spot, elusive, dangerous in close combat, but brittle if shot at or taking casualties.

We've had a bit of debate WRT Indians in M&T being a bit too brittle. The Reaction Test table is fine, but combined with the max size of 6 figures in a unit is tough. Talked about allowing larger (e.g. 8, 10 or 12 figure) units, but the jury is still out.

Dexter +1.

Yep. In my Mohawk Valley games, militia evaporates if the Indians make contact.

Personally I use the FIW variant for The Sword and The Flame

What I have found though is the layout, scenario and objectives are critical to the game

Had a good game of woodland Indians in variant brother vs brother game. The bows were killer based on ROF

A bit later at Pensacola even the Spanish light infantry were ordered not to enter dense woods because the Indians were so dangerous in them.

M&T may choice.

By the way -the M&T 2nd edition will be becoming available…..it has been announced that Northstar will launch the new rules and the FIW/AWI supplement as a Nickstarter (pre-order) soon.

As soon as I finish my series of games based on Seven Samurai with Test of Honor, I plan another Reel War, Drums Along the Mohawk. In particular the first attack in the movie, when the colonists are working on the Martin farm, and they beat a retreat to the fort. An interesting skirmish scenario of fighting retreat, just perfect for Song of Drums and Tomahawks. Could also be used for FIW.

Thanks for the votes on our rules, guys! In addition to the base rules, we have two supplements – really campaign/scenario books: Beaver Wars & Pequot Wars. Check them out on our website if you're interested: firstcommandwargames.com
