Rosemary Sutcliff. The Lantern Bearers, Frontier Wolf. You could start with Eagle of the Ninth as there is a series of books dealing with Romans over many Generations in Briton. |

I always enjoyed Sutcliffe, Breem and Graves. I've recently finished the Ian Ross 'Twilight of Empire' series and enjoyed them very much. |
