Hello all.

All the best for 2020 and may the force be with you.

I was wondering if some players were using some 3D printed Star Wars armies (storm troopers, ATST, ATAT, rebels, etc.) to play miniature games?

Advantage is to print 10mm or 15mm miniatures which might be quite optimal to play ATSTs and ATATs :)

I remember a post where someone put a link to 3D star wars miniatures to print but I cannot find it anymore :(

I suspect the owners of the Intellectual Property probably sent a cease and desist letter, hence the removal of the 3-D art.

Ouais2506 Jan 2020 8:23 a.m. PST

It's not what I meant: there was a post dealing with micro star wars miniatures and people were searching for miniatures.
And someone recommended them to 3d print them and put a link.
I cannot find the post anymore but I don't think it was removed.

If the 3D files are of the actual Star Wars designs, then yes, those are illegal unless fully licensed by Lucasfilm/Disney (which is highly unlikely), and any such link would have been removed from TMP by the editors.
If the files are of original non-Disney designs that would fit with the Star Wars setting, that would not be an issue, provided the link was to the original creator of that art.
Which are you inquiring about?

A search via Google might work.

My topic was not about intellectual property but about star wars miniatures 3D printed to play with, especially in small scale.

Star wars Legion seems to be a nice game, but the miniatures might be too big for my taste. If I found an alternative with 10mm or even 15mm miniatures, it would be perfect.
I'm pretty sure people are playing with such setup, that's why I'm asking.
And I would like to know more, and see pictures about the rendering on a table ;)

You did post this

> I remember a post where someone put a link to 3D star wars miniatures to print but I cannot find it anymore :(

People were telling you why you can't find it any longer.

Ouais2507 Jan 2020 8:28 a.m. PST

@Dynaman: yes, and this is not a question. However, my question remains unanswered ;)

At the other end of your scale desires, but I game 54mm Star Wars and am 3D printing 54mm vehicles and minis to game with. The 3D model sites have lots of STLs to use for otherwise unavailable minis. For Legion scale I have used some 3d printed alien heads for rebel miniature conversions. There is lots of discussion of this on the FFG Legion forum.

@ghostrunner: lol, you think I was sent by Disney to chase guys playing with miniatures? ;)
Given the complexity of creating an account here, I would rather go on Youtube. There are plenty of people 3D printing Star wars stuff.

But none printing micro miniatures :(

@Lostpict: I think that you speak about Mel miniatures.
Those models are great indeed. But the price of his models are just crazy if I want to build an army. Idea of downscaling to 15 or 10mm is to reduce the game area and storage needs, but also to make savings. If 3D printing 2 companies of Storm troopers and rebels will cost twice the price I would pay for a SW Legion game, it would be non-sense :(
Btw, 54mm must be huge, do you have ATATs?
Why did you choose this scale?

LostPict09 Jan 2020 6:27 a.m. PST

Ouais25, yes I used the Mel Miniatures heads which are pricey. As an example, if you search for Legion scale models on Thingiverse there are plenty of people and vehicles STLs available. I would recommend a resin printer for this purpose, but the models are free and cheap to print.

54mm is huge and that is part of the fun. In short around '06, Hasbro released a number of 54mm Star Wars "unleashed battle packs" typically of 4 figures. Amongst these was a Hoth set with the rebel defense artillery. I bought 4 sets hoping they would work with the WOTC 30mm minis, alas too large but very cool. I ended up buying a pile of this stuff over time (even some this week). I do have an AT-AT (the Legacy version) and it is about 1/35th scale. It towers of the minis and dominates the table. My son came up to play a Christmas Star Wars game this weekend and is printing a pair of scale matching AT-ST as we speak. Here is a blog post about the 54mm Star Wars minis – link

@lostpic: congratulations for your comprehensive blog. Many information for 54mm.
If only I could find the same for 10mm ;)

thedrake09 Jan 2020 3:30 p.m. PST

Have you tried looking for the old Micro machine sets that had small figures??? May be close to what you lookig for.

If not try GZG 15mm Stargrunt line at least for close proxies.

Ouais2510 Jan 2020 9:05 a.m. PST

@thedrake: micro machines are too expensive. And usually, people don't sell miniatures only :(
GZG 15mm Stargrunt look nice, but not really star wars to me :(
However, they have nice mechas :)

Smaller than 10mm, but usable are the even smaller ~6mm OOP MPC model Battle of Hoth Action Scene and Rebel Base sets that have AT-ST, AT-AT, artillery, troops, and spaceships.

These scale with X-wing.

Beast of War repurposed these for Endor

I have the stuff to do this, just need to paint the ground forces. So in the interim, I did Scariff with two simultaneous games. One with rebels trying to break thru the planetary shield and one with the rebels engaged in ground support. Alas no troops, but at least ground vehicles:

@LostPic: now we're talking! :)

The battle of Hoth and Endor are great.
This micro scale is cool (ATATs and ATSTs are not big at all).
The minis are great (though, I am wondering if the minis have the same scale as some spaceships like X wings look smaller than the rest).

I checked quickly for MPC models on most famous french 2nd hand site and the prices are crazy.
