As a Canuck, I have of course read mostly on on Commonwealth operations. I'd like to read at a decent book on the US armies after Normandy (although including Normandy is not a problem) in France and Germany. Any recommendations on one volume readable "orientation" history?

LOTS of good reading

I recommend "The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945" by Rick Atkinson. It's the third book of his "Liberation Trilogy" which covers the development of the U.S. Army through its experiences in Africa, Sicily, Italy and Western Europe. It's a really great read.

Can't recommend the government's Green Books highly enough.

Can't go wrong with the Green Books but since you specifically asked about a one volume readable source then the Atkinson book hands down.

The Atkinson for a one-volume work, yes.

Else, the Green books, available on-line…

IMAO, Russell Weigley's _Eisenhower's Lieutenants_ is well worth reading.
A two-volume edition was among '4 books for $1 USD' Military Book Club offers, way back when, mayhaps in used book sales you'll find.

For individual battles, I recommend Ardennes 1944, the Bitter Woods, Snow and Steel, The US army's battle for Charlemagne's city, Battle of the Hurtgen Forest and A Time for Trumpets, September Hope, and for Normandy After D-Day, Landing on the Edge of Eternity, and the books on Omaha and Utah Beach by Joseph Balkoski.
