As the troop buildup in the Gulf continues, it seems that war is almost inevitable. So far no code-name for the operation has been made public. Once actually used as top-secret codes for upcoming military actions, these operation names are now an important part of the mass-marketing for public approval of military strikes. I guess the guys at the Pentagon who are responsible for naming operations haven't been able to come up with anything catchy since all the good ones (Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Just Cause, Ensure Freedom, ...) have already been taken. Let's lend these folks a hand and give some suggestions for naming the operation we will be wargaming in the future.

How about "Operation Clinton Couldn't"? Or Oeration About F***** Time? Really getting tired of wise-butt liberal, draft-dodging, Jane Fonda Wanna Be's wringing their hands about Bush's war. Ooooh, the rest of the world doesn't like us, so we better not take care of our strategic intersts, they m,ight not like us more! I can recall a philospher (Santanyana-sp?) who said, Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it---or something to that effect. If Iraq won't abide by the UN & US terms, then it's time for us to walk the walk. War is not good, only sometimes necessary. |

Oh my! Is sarcasm the order of the day or what? If everyone is so pissed at the idea of going to war, why does the poll I saw give a 50% plus figure to the number who think going to war is a good idea? My suggestions for a code name: Operation Desert Buster; O Oilslick; O Crusader (oh the Muslims would just love THAT one :); O God's Army; O Pro bono publico; O New Jersey; O Exterminator; O Mordor; O Get Saddam; O Liberator; O Ad nauseam; O Turnbuckle; O Go for glory; O Second round; O Eye for an eye; O Up mars; O Deliverance; O GWB jr; O Desert rat. :) |

pzivh43: With the risk of getting my post deleted for digressing I would like to take the opportunity to say that I am getting dreadfully tired of the popular american view that the rest of the world (usually referring to Europe) somehow doesn't "like" the US. Being of a different opinion doesn't mean "not liking". This rethoric makes it seem like we of a different opinon think like we do only because we somehow want to harm the US. Our arguments are ignored and we europeans are labeled as anti-american while americans of the same opinion are labeled as "wise-butt liberal, draft-dodging, Jane Fonda Wanna Be's" ("unpatriotic" being the more orthodox term i believe). |

Who says once Iraq is brought "under the crosshairs" that the terrorism will stop...? Sure, SH may be harbouring/funding some of the terrorist orgs, but turning Iraq into glass will only enflame the situation (no pun intended). I wouldn't be surprised to find that all the current rhetoric and hype is very similar to what got the Crusaders pumped up to tramp all the way down to Jerusalem way back when! ...so for my suggestions: Operation Holy Crusade? or Operation Revenge-is-best-served-at-the-end-of-a-gun-barrel? or Operation Intollerance = Escalation? ps: I'm pleased to see the Membership of this site generally has a good enough sense of humour to "take a joke" in the face of adversity - bravo. |

How about "Are we at war yet?" Operation "No blood on my hands,' inspired by the overwrought enthusiasm all those nice conservatives like Goofy George II, Dick Cheney, Rush Limabaugh, etc, etc, etc have for this war which is really charming when you consider how they evaded service in Vietnam. I also favor Operation "Crrrapp" from the initials of the dreary national security team of Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Ridge, Ashcroft, Powell and Perle who are practically in a state of orgasm in anticipation of this one. How about "Iraq, then France and Germany," for those clods who think badly of those countries because they are thinking for themselves? Jim - who served in Vietnam and thinks this one makes even less sense than Vietnam. Just because I went through it doesn't mean I want others to do so. "When people are entering upon a war they do things the wrong way round. Action comes first and it is only when they have already suffered that they begin to think." Thucydides. |

Observation: President Bush is determined to remove Saddam Hussein from power and create a democratic Iraq, by any means necessary. Follow up observation: There are only two possible ways to do the above: 1. By the use of violent force, relying on a (politically) incomplete (yet still significant) international coalition if necessary. 2. By *united* world opinion *promising* the use of violent force, frightening Saddam into surrender. The end result of #1 is a dead Saddam, after or during a war of indeterminate length, with attendant casualties of an indeterminate amount. The end result of #2 is an exiled and powerless Saddam (plus his various underlings), with an internationally brokered interim government recognizing human rights, etc., all *without* war and the attendant casualties. BUT... Unless the world *unites* behind the concept of #2-- which gives the world the preferred outcome-- then #1 is inevitable. Unfortunately, the world seems unwilling to make this commitment and to stand with resolve. Therefore, Saddam assumes he has a chance to survive, based on half-measures of semi-compliance, out-right deception, and veiled threats of terrorist actions (using weapons he says he doesn't have...). Turn enough people and nations against #2, and he thinks he may either survive, stall or even prevent #1 all together. If he can delay the world long enough to make us afraid of the idea, or bored with the idea, then maybe he can survive. But if he *knows* his number is up, if he *knows* he'll be dead by August, then maybe, just maybe, he'll surrender and accept exile in a villa in Venezuala. But the *only* way this will happen is if he perceives he's got no one left to hide behind. Not France, not Germany, not China, not Russia, not a pack of Hollywood "useful idiot" activists... nobody. So here's the irony of the whole thing: All the people opposing the war are making the war more inevitable. Whereas if they stood together and said, "Yes, the government of Iraq is evil, is in violation of international law and must be removed, by force if necessary..." then a war might very well never happen. So, in keeping with this irony, I propose the following code name: Operation Firm Resolve. (And I'll lay bets that will indeed be the name...) |

Oh my! Is sarcasm the order of the day or what? If everyone is so pissed at the idea of going to war, why does the poll I saw give a 50% plus figure to the number who think going to war is a good idea? pzivh43 Because most of them have never smelt wet blood or felt how slippy wet blood is on there hands or seen dead children......if they did or had then they wouldnt be so smart about starting a war with Iraq. Just watch that 50% dwindle when the body bags come home the same 50% that make up the B Sqaud B here when you go off to fight and B here when you come back. Pavlov |
