"Fliers for the first annual "Spamarama" flooded Austin's streets in the spring of 1978. Though the event, a Spam-themed cook-off, was set for April 1, it was anything but an April Fool's joke. Instead its creator, musician David Arnsberger, had devised it as an absurd retort to the saturation of chili cook-offs and barbecue contests around town.

Held at the now-defunct Soap Creek Saloon, Spamarama had one golden rule: All dishes had to include the pre-cooked tinned meat (the flier made sure to stipulate that dog food wasn't permitted). Other than that, everything was fair game—a culinary autonomy that its 300-plus attendees happily embraced…"

I grew up on the stuff- fried, in sandwiches and served up cold – SPAM and peanut butter were all that was between us and starvation!

SPAM, beats the HELL outa ludefisk!!! That why Minnesotans developed it, ANYTHING to keep from being forced to eat ludefisk (retch).
I mean, white fish soaked in lye and dried, SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? lye is POISON!!!
No wonder the Vikings were so badass!
