When I look at an OOB for the 2nd. Prussian Reserve Army Corps I see the 4th Garde zu Fuss reg't. has 4 battalions. There is also the combined Guard Reserve Infantry reg't. also with 4 battalions. Then there is the combined Infantry Brigade with the 4th bns. from four different infantry regiments. Am I correct in thinking that these 4th. bns. are the regimental depots that have been taken into the field rather than Landwehr bns.? |

Possibly so. During the Befreiungskrieg (1813-1814), some of the reserve infantry regiments had four battalions. During the autumn 1813 fighting, these 4th battalions were used to bring the other three up to strength. I could see the Prussians still having that system in 1866. Jim |
