Since military history is about beards vs none beards, epic moustaches, evil-looking goatees. Scary looking lumberjacks/pioneers and of course the sideburns.

So this is totally 110% related to wargaming.

How often do you shave?

I have a full beard and moustache. I've been told I look like Sean Connery in "Hunt For Red October"(?!?!). huh?

Of course I out weight him by a many pounds ! evil grin

When I was younger and had metal rimmed glasses I was compared to Teddy Roosevelt. Now that I'm older and have black rimmed glasses I have been confused with Colonel Sanders (without the secret recipe).

3 days a week, or as few as I can get away with at my government job.

MajorB31 Dec 2019 9:48 a.m. PST

Every day. Can't stand facial hair.

Every day.

I've had a mustache at my wife's request or about 40 years now. I shave every day, even though I'm retired now. I seem to get around to it later every day, though.

This year, I was interested to learn that, before WWI, Hitler had a big, bushy mustache. After gas warfare was introduced, they learned that a large mustache prevented gas masks from getting a good seal, so it was a choice between being clean shaven (as much as was possible in the trenches) or having a little toothbrush mustache. Hence the style, sported by many German and Austrian veterans. (Just reinforcing Gunfreak's initial point here).

I shaved in November 1971 for a meeting with clients. My boss told me not to let it happen again.

I have had a mustache for 50 years, aspiring to a Zapata style. After retiring I added a Vandyke beard until I found out my nickname was 'Col. Sanders." Returned to just a 'stache for the balance of my remaining years.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP31 Dec 2019 12:09 p.m. PST

I have a goatee, it's lush and full.
But that's all I can grow. I tried 3 months of not shaving to see if I could get a full beard. But it was a weak feeble thing. So I shaved it off for Christmas.
Keeping my goatee.

I'm lazy so my neck and cheeks only get a shave every 3 or 4 days.
I don't get a 5 o'clock shadow.

Stryderg31 Dec 2019 12:16 p.m. PST

I used to rock a goatee and shaved the rest daily. Now that I'm older, I can actually sprout hairs farther up the cheekbones. So I've let it grow out to a short beard. The neck gets shaved every 2-3 days, the beards gets trimmed once a week or so (whenever the wife complains).

tigrifsgt31 Dec 2019 1:35 p.m. PST

I shave every day, but the moustache has been there for 44 years without being removed.

Dagwood31 Dec 2019 2:08 p.m. PST

I've had a beard and moustache since I was a student about 40+ years ago. Since then I've shaved every time I needed a new job (some people might object) or started same. Quickly reverted, though.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP31 Dec 2019 3:13 p.m. PST

I trim the edges of my beard almost every day. I trimmed back to a goatee for Halloween a few years ago (shaved my head, too, for a pretty decent Walter White look), but I haven't been completely clean-shaven for almost 30 years.

I have grown a beard twice in my life and it looked very good -- I looked kind of like a conquistador. That said, both times I discover that facial hair and cheese enchiladas don't go very well together. Since I like cheese enchiladas better than having a beard, I shave once a day every day.

von Schwartz31 Dec 2019 7:30 p.m. PST

Jerry Garcia, get outta town!!

Shaved once when my daughter was about 2, she screamed bloody murder when I wanted to give her a hug, she's 34 now and I haven't shaved the stache since then.

C'mon Jeff, you mean to tell us you've had that stache since you were…what…12-15?

Aside from a brief period in 2016 when I wore a goatee, I have had a beard and mustache since August 1976. I still shave my lower neck and to keep edges trim.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP31 Dec 2019 7:42 p.m. PST

Had a beard in university just to convince people I was older than 12, then a mustache in grad school/first job (due to the personal protective gear I had to wear) and clean shaven for about 20 years now that I realized I don't need to look any older than I already am

Actually I shave every two or three days now – a little five o'clock shadow is OK but if I wait for more than three days I look like a homeless person

USAFpilot31 Dec 2019 8:23 p.m. PST

I shave for work; it's required. Don't shave on days off. I've grown beard on vacation; didn't like it. After a few days of growth it begins to feel like I have a Brillo pad taped to my face.

I do have a mustache, had a beard for many years but got tired of being followed in stores as if I was a shoplifter. Shave usually every day in the morning usually 4-5 AM even though I'm retired.

brass101 Jan 2020 9:04 a.m. PST

I've had a mustache, which I grew in the Army, for a bit over 50 years. I have had a beard off and on for the past 30 years because 1. I'm too lazy to shave it and 2. it stops people from telling me that I look like John Cleese, which I don't.

Once a week, the wife likes the scraggy look. Glad the job doesn't require to be fresh shaved.

Do the beard once or twice a year (Nov. and Feb. generally) for about a month at a time.

For all of you, all of US, out there watching our hairlines beating a hasty retreat up our foreheads and across the top to the back of our heads. Remember this, you still have as much hair today as you did 30-40 years ago, it's just been…relocated (hint: check mirror and turn around)!!!

I've had a beard since 1999. I also had a beard in the early 1990s, but it was too crappy, so I went around cleanshaven until I was over 30.

I used to maintain the beard by mowing my entire face with a single setting on the clippers, about once a fortnight. In 2016, I cut off all my long hair, so now I mow my entire head about once a fortnight, though I have to set the mower to a couple different depths for the skull.

I only shave my neck, and that only for comfort. In my twenties, I shaved less than once a week, but I've had to shave more often as I age, and now I shave every 2-3 days. At this rate, I'm going to be shaving multiple times a day if I live past 100. <grumble>

- Ix

PS: Fun fact – I've never paid for a haircut. Not even once.

COL Scott ret03 Jan 2020 3:46 a.m. PST

I shave every day, except when camping. My wife prefers to kiss me when I am clean shaven – I really enjoy kissing her so I shave daily.

Two of my four sons have beards (one full, one three musketeer style) my son n law also has a beard – although his is a bit scraggly.

So our family is a bit facial hair agnostic.
