My home town is now under a "Freezing Fog Alert." Honestly, my first thought on hearing it was "someone misread his roll on the weather table."

Does anyone know of a set of rules under which "freezing fog" is even a thing?

Rules, no. Real life, yes.

Beware of ice on the roads !

Happens all the time in the winter at 9,000+ feet here in central CO. Normally it isn't as bad as freezing rain but the same rules apply, don't go out unless necessary and if you must, exercise extreme caution.

We usually have 2-3 days per year where it gets under 0c or 32F. So I'm not familiar with freezing…anything. We do have stinky fog (when the wind blows the chemical plant smoke the wrong way), burning fog (aka smoke), and funky fog (after a lot of rain, everything smells rotten).

We see snow about once every 15 years. When that happens, businesses close and drivers stay home.

I always thought "freezing fog" should be impenetrable, since it is frozen, but it doesn't work like that. Good for us, I guess.

When on the roads, they refer to it (fog/rain) as black ice, since it just looks wet, if the coating is thin enough. It is very slick though. Managed to total a car on my first encounter with it, so I recommend avoiding it when at all possible.

Be careful Robert or you could wind up like this guy,

Oh, trust me: once people stopped paying me to work, I cleared a three-day swathe with Christmas in the middle. I won't be on a road again before Friday regardless of weather.

You don't need weather to make driving hazardous or unpleasant when you have belated Christmas shoppers, drunks and the post-Christmas returns in varying combinations. I take the same approach to "Black Friday." No bargain can possibly be worth being out in that mess.

Fortunately, I am unlikely to run out of castings to paint--ever.

Freezing fog can result in some beautiful scenes, like glittering white coniferous trees.

They're best observed from the safety of your living room, though, not while sitting sweating with your heart in your mouth holding the back of the seat in front of you as you feel the school bus fishtailing at 50 mph in heavy morning traffic.

Freezing fog on a bridge near Williamsburg, VA led to a 69 car pile up on I-64 a few days ago … link

If the fog is freezing, maybe someone should let it in for a warm, after all it is Christmas!
