Why do some people do up the top button on their shirts when not wearing a tie? I know, I know, we're broaching Nobel Prize For Inanity here

It seems to me that the more anal among us generally do so. I recall that Tony Shaloub's "Monk" did all the buttons, and the guy who plays Holmes on "Elementary" does so as well. Perhaps it is a sign of being up tight. |

I remember my Mom would tell me to button all the buttons, without a tie. She, evidently thought it looked "smart", but I thought it looked and felt creepy. |

I've no idea why people arse about with buttons on shirts at all. T-shirt and fleece (depending on weather), jobs a good 'un! |

Cerdic, agreed. Since retiring, I only wear shirts with buttons for weddings and funerals. |
