Why do some people do up the top button on their shirts when not wearing a tie?

I know, I know, we're broaching Nobel Prize For Inanity here
but before I get headhunted by Cosmopolitan I want some answers!

I paid good money for that shirt. I'm going to use all the buttons. :)

It makes one appear more intelligent I think… or, is it less intelligent? I get those two mixed up.

You don't know that they are not going to wear a tie. They just have not put it on yet, maybe.

Only button top button with tie. Otherwise open top button with no tie …

Like climbing a mountain: because it's there.

Or maybe it's a fear of leaving any part of your body exposed if it can be avoided.

It seems to me that the more anal among us generally do so. I recall that Tony Shaloub's "Monk" did all the buttons, and the guy who plays Holmes on "Elementary" does so as well. Perhaps it is a sign of being up tight.

I remember my Mom would tell me to button all the buttons, without a tie. She, evidently thought it looked "smart", but I thought it looked and felt creepy.

Generally, the more of my body that is covered, the better off the public is.

FTR, I don't button the top button with a tie. If I button the top button, what is the tie doing?

Why are you questioning someone's fashion choices? You can't win this. If someone thinks they look good, they'll do it.

I mean, let's talk about Sean….

Why have a button--with matching button hole, even--if it isn't to be used?

Cerdic22 Dec 2019 7:26 a.m. PST

I've no idea why people arse about with buttons on shirts at all. T-shirt and fleece (depending on weather), jobs a good 'un!

von Schwartz22 Dec 2019 9:43 a.m. PST

Maybe they need to hide the hicky?

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP22 Dec 2019 6:26 p.m. PST

Cerdic, agreed. Since retiring, I only wear shirts with buttons for weddings and funerals.
