…burgers are not vegetarian or vegan. "Plant-based meat alternatives continue to appeal to American diners, according to a new study from market research firm The NPD Group. Sales have risen from $118.7 USD million in 2017 to $192.1 USD million this year — and our national obsession with hamburgers is playing a big role. The most visible factor in this growth is the rise of cutting-edge, plant-based meat alternatives such as Beyond Meat and the Impossible Burger, which are redefining the concept of a traditional veggie burger. "Meat alternative providers, particularly in the burger plant-based category, have done a good job on the taste front and in making vegetables reproduce the meat-eating experience," said NPD analyst Darren Seifer…." Yuck! Eating vegetables is not a "meat-eating experience" no matter what their propagandists tell you. Wow, a whopping 0.8% rise in demand annually, is "astounding". Actually, I'm a bit surprised there is any rise in demand at all, so at least they have that going for them. Reminder, "Double-Meat Monday" (Copyright 2019) is just a couple of days away! |

Phony research. Companies like NPD exist to tell clients what they want to hear and back it up with narrow-based polls, usually with very biased questions. |

@Legion 4 I've got to try that BK non-meat burger ! I did, eh! It's OK, although ridiculously over priced. The SWMBO pointed out that have to use large quantities of Coconut oil to make it taste like meat, that's the "Bad" cholesterol everyone is talking about. So lets scrarf down one of those bad boys and a large order of fries and then sit around and listen to our arteries slamming shut, now THATS entertainment.(smile) |

But can they make a prime rib that looks and tastes like broccoli? |
Thresher01 | 22 Dec 2019 5:58 p.m. PST |
Apparently, to get the veggie burgers to taste like meat a bit more too, they fry them on the same grill as burgers in some places, in beef fat. Not sure BK does that, since they theoretically use a flame grill, though I haven't seen one of those in use in years there (don't go there much anymore), since it seems they prefer to cook them well ahead of time, and then just re-warm in the microwave. Cooking for "Double-Meat Monday" is done. Mesquite-smoked, pulled pork, hickory smoked ribs, etc., etc.. Can't wait. |

I think most people will be eating faux-meat in the future; very possibly the near future. It's easy to dismiss as the cranky concept of a few extremists but when you look into it, the thing is being propelled by big business. This isn't surprising as the stuff needs to be manufactured in large, expensive factories. There's a lot of money in for multi-national corporations. So just like people were sold on smoking tobacco by the big tobacco companies ("it's good for you!") so the pressure to move from animal flesh to something out of chemical vat will be overwhelming. Look at how margarine largely replaced butter. The story is very similar. link Is faux meat better or worse for you? Different discussion.Personally, I don't trust the capitalists. |

Veggiemeat will only be a temporary thing until 3-D food printers become available. Then you will be able to print a perfect real meat steak every time… ;-) |

Yea, or vegetables mashed together and called "burgers", "beef", or "steak". Where are the truth in advertising people when we need them to keep companies from committing consumer fraud? |

The best marketing in the world will not make people buy something they don't want. That's adorable. But don't feel alone in not recognising that marketing & advertising exist to create demand where none exists. link |

Marketing? Naw! They tried that with the Prius. To paraphrase Herman Cain, "How'd that work out for ya?". |

They tried that with the Prius. To paraphrase Herman Cain, "How'd that work out for ya?". The Prius family totalled global cumulative sales of 14.05 million units as of January 31 2019. So the answer would be "pretty good". Sales are starting to tank but that's because its an ageing design & better hybrids & electrics are on the market but no one could dispute Prius has been a huge success for Toyota…..partly thanks to some clever marketing. YouTube link I can't help but feel I'm stating the blindingly obvious: advertising usually works. Some of us didn't know that? Really? When the multi-nationals want us to buy something, we usually do. |
