Hi all. My wife needs to get a Secret Santa gift for a coworker. I know he likes WWII history as he has recommended a few books to me. But don't think he is as nuts about it like us wargamers. So looking for ideas for a book. Any suggestions?

Thanks Xin/Jeff

It all depends on what he is specifically interested in.
If he likes the Eastern Front, I would recommend:
Beevor's Stalingrad book
Enemy at the Gates, also about Stalingrad
David Glantz book on Kursk
Beevor's book on the battle of Berlin
Glantz books on the battle of Smolensk 1941
If he likes D-Day/Normandy, I would recommend:
Beevor's book on the campaign
Joseph Balkoski's books on Omaha and Utah Beach
The Osprey Campaign series Normandy books
Landing on the edge of eternity by Robert Kershaw
Stephen Ambrose D-Day book
The Dead and those about to die by John C. McManus
If he likes Battle of the Bulge or other Western Europe campaigns, I recommend:
Ardennes 1944 by Beevor
Aachen: The US Army's battle for Charlemagne's city
Charles MacDonald A Time for Trumpets and Battle of the Hurtgen Forest
September Hope: The American side of a bridge too far
If he is interested in the Italian Campaign, or early German campaigns, I recommend:
To Lose a Battle: France 1940
The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-44
If he likes the Pacific war, I recommend:
The Ultimate Battle by Bill Sloan
Iwo Jima: Legacy of valor
Richard B Frank's Guadalcanal
Bill Sloan's Brotherhood of Heroes
Shanghai 1937: Stalingrad on the Yangtze
At Dawn We Slept: The untold story of Pearl Harbor
D-Day in the Pacific: The Battle of Saipan
If he is interested in the Holocaust, I recommend:
Auschwitz: A new history
Ordinary Men: Police battalion 101
The Holocaust by Martin Gilbert
If he is interested in North Africa, then the only one I can recommend is An Army at Dawn. A really good book, by the way.
If he is interested in a general history of the war, I recommend:
The Second World War by Martin Gilbert
Beevor's The Second World War
The German War: A nation under arms
A World At Arms by Gerhard Weinberg

Really enjoyed Quartered Safe Out Here by George McDonald Frazier, about his service in Burma.

70 true stories of the Second World War
ASIN: B0000CIO9A
The Sunday People newspaper asked their readers, who had a story to tell from WW2, to send them in, the book is the best 70 accounts.
Moving, funny and down to earth, real accounts from individuals from every aspect of the war. The ex Japenese POWs arriving on a troop ship in Ceylon moves me every time
