Pictured are 29 conversions, which mainly use the bods from the Airfix Robin Hood set as the base to which Scratchmade shields, weapons, swopping heads etc from the set or Body parts from other bods in the Airfix range have been added. 12 other conversions from the Catapult and battering ram aren´t included in the pic.
Loads of pics, unpainted and painted, including catapult Crew, Scratch made shields, crossbows and staff slings link |

Admittedly, Paul, your painting & conversions are stellar but the essential quality of the old Airfix figures is the foundation for your fine work. well done you….& well done Airfix. |

Paul, those look great! I recall once in the "dark ages", converting the Robin Hood figures to Swiss Pikemen using stripped down trash bag ties as pikes. |

I agree, these look great – very bright colour schemes. Tony |

Very nice. Airfix made some great figures. |

How do you stop the paint flaking off? I've never found a good way to do it |

Great work! Besides the Robin Hood and Sheriff of Nottingham, didn't Airfix have a set of medieval men-at-arms, including a pikeman in plate armor? Maybe I'm thinking of the Sheriff of Nottingham set. Huh: Airfix is still in business. Here is its (or their, for those across the pond) US website: link |

Thanks all :-) @David. I´ve just About finished putting together a "how to" or rather "How I do" post on painting them. Which paints I use etc. Should be finished by the end of the week. Never had a Problem with flaking paints etc..no matter what type of plastic, metal or resin and they get handled with a Level of disregard, they are after all blobs of (mainly) plastic. They´ve been dropped, tipped into a heap in storage boxes, shaken in the same in the backs of cars etc. I´ll bung up the link to it when I post it. Same Question as here; TMP link What does everyone do with them post painting that they Need "chemical" Treatment pre painting ? |

Lovely, thanks Paul – my 20mm Japanese, USMC and ANZACs will be pleased! |

How do you stop the paint flaking off? I've never found a good way to do it I feel your pain! I ended up putting a layer of gloss polyurethane varnish over the fragile bendy bits (like spears and muskets) – before matt varnishing them, it seemed to stop flaking pretty well. |

Very nice work, thanks for sharing. I put my Airfix/soft plastic figures through a rock polisher with fine grit. This removes all vestiges of mold release and gives a rough surface that holds paint. Still a problem with thin parts like arms but then apply Minwax Polyurethan to hold the paint. Still prefer metal, however. |

Excellent job. I got out of plastics years ago because of plastic deterioration. My 1960's ACW required super glue more than dice the last time they saw the field. |

You've got at least one Airfix "ancient Britons" figure there! Shows what impressive and convincing work can be done with these plastics. Pretty sure the only Mediaeval set was indeed the "S of N" figures. |
Pauls Bods | 16 Dec 2019 8:46 a.m. PST |
Thanks again all :-) @Vince. Same with a lot of my Airfix ACW, snapped off at the ankles etc. Same with some cream coloured Airfix bedouins. Oddly, the green and cream coloured Robin Hood lot haven´t suffered..yet. @Robert. I used two Airfix britons(one ended up in the catapult crew)and bits from the Airfix Romans. The red and yellow archer drawing his bow has had a Roman archer´s arm added |

Don't forget you can get these Airfix kits reissued from HaT miniatures. |

Oh…and sorry Paul….meant to say terrific work as always! I enjoy your blog. |

Thanks Dave. HäT did re-release them but they are also rare, I haven´t seen them for sale for years now and those that do appear are sometimes as expensive as the originals link Also, I´ve got a Feeling some sellers were/are stuffing old airfix boxes with the ones from HäT. |

Oh yeah – that's a real thing. I had a friend who sold some empty boxes to an "Avid Airfix collector" about the time that the kits got re-released…..always suspected there was some crafty "old box with new kit" shenanigans going on. You need to know the original colour of the plastic (if it's really that important to you!) |
Pauls Bods | 18 Dec 2019 2:04 p.m. PST |
Thought so. Mind you. The kit I used for the SH.A.G was in an old airfix box and in a rummage crate under the table. I expected to pay silly Money but I got it for a fiver. Win some, loose some ? |

Plastic-dip clear matte rubberized spray. Ace Hardware carries it. Wal-Mart carries various types except for the clear. It forms a bond. The only way to get it off is to cut it off. Great product. I've been painting plastics since the early 70s. This product will eliminate any flaking peeling. Just shake well. Thanks John |
