Got out my gladiators and have been alternating SoM and Red Sand. For Red Sand I now remember one of things in the Red rules that didn't work for me: the retiarius net attacks. Basically the retiarius throws the net in his turn, tangles the opponent and knocks him down. It is now the opponents turn and he automatically escapes from the net—and we go to the next turn. If the opponent wins the initiative he gets up and attacks the retiarius who has now lost the use of his net. He'd be better off never having thrown the net. Any house rules on this?

Try Sons of Mars by Joe Veltre.

I have both and like them both. A different feel, but great games for each.

So it seems the trick is don't throw your net when you have initiative. On a round that the enemy has gone first, throw you net; he ends the round tangled. Then next turn there is a 50% chance that the foe throws off the net and you have to defend yourself with a trident BUT there is a chance that you win initiative and get to attack a guy who is lying down, tangled in a net.

Thank you for the tactics!
