I'm in the process of doing a 1:48 Tiger I diorama in a winter setting. The winter setting is going to be fairly non-specific, just a Tiger and its crew in the snow. However I do want the Tiger to bear insignia of an actual unit that did serve in a theater during winter. Obviously this would include many units that served on both the western and eastern fronts during the winters of 1941-1944. Essentially I want to avoid marking the Tiger with a unit insignia that served in Africa or other place where it didn't generally snow. Units that served in Russia or anywhere along the eastern front is my preference. I did a fair amount of searching online and found a decent amount of decal sets available but to be honest I'm overwhelmed with all the choices. I'm building an early production Tiger I but I'm not read well enough to know where exactly the early Tigers were sent. So basically just help steer me towards a proper insignia set for an early prod. Tiger I serving in a winter setting! Thanks in advance. |

Well if you want the earlier Schwere Panzerabteilung 502 Heavy Panzer was the first to receive the Tiger I and it spent most of the winter of 1942-43 near Leningrad, while 503 Heavy Panzer was with Army Group Don and also spent the winter of 1942-43 on the Eastern Front link link |

Techmod's 1:48 early Tiger I decal sheet has two markings for white washed Tigers, SO4 (Wittmann) from ssSchwere Panzer Division LSSAH and 821 from ssSchwere Panzer Division Das Reich. S14 should also work if you prefer a generic Tiger over a Tiger Ace like Wittmann's since it's from the same unit.
Be careful with Leningrad Tigers since the turrets of the Tigers sent there can look quite different from later standard early production Tigers:
