"The American Civil War was a titanic struggle between the overwhelming numeric and material advantages of the Union, and the tactical and leadership advantages of the Confederacy. In such a large conflict many stories unfortunately go untold and it becomes easy to oversimplify each side.

Even describing the conflict as "North vs. South" is inaccurate to a degree, as support for the war was far from unanimous on either side. On occasions when dissent within each side is discussed today, the focus is almost always on the Union's Copperheads. However, it should be remembered that there was a vigorous pro-Union movement in the South, particularly in areas where not many people owned slaves…"

I would question the leadership advantage if you factor in men like Bragg or Hood.

I have tried to avoid the terms North and South in my writings on the Civil War, as neither geographic area was unanimous is supporting one side or the other. Especially, there were numerous Union supporters in the South, both black and white, as well as Southern (that is slave-legal) states that never seceded. And, I am sure, a great many people who did not particularly support either side (Copperheads in the North, for instance, many of whom were not necessarily pro-Confederate, just anti-war).

it was a confusing time for many. I agree with donlowry in that many people were not for the other side, just not wanting war, or not liking what their own side was doing.

A distnat relative of mine was a famed copperhead, but most of his speeches tended to focus on loss of liberty, and his opinion of unjust tyranny.

I am curious about where the author learned about the ACW. When I was young the attention was focused on Southerners who stayed loyal to the U.S. The NYC Draft riots was about all I was taught about anti war activity in the North.
