"Colonel Black, a decorated U.S. Army Ranger of the Korean and Vietnam wars, is author of several Ranger histories, the latest focused on the American Civil War. Rangers have a venerable legacy in American military history, going back to colonial times, combining Native American hit-and-run infantry tactics with scouting for intelligence and using accurate, long-range rifles. The author aptly observes, "Terrain is the workplace of the ranger," which was certainly true for the 72 Union and 270 Confederate ranger units deployed during the Civil War. Tactics were also similar, but now largely undertaken by highly mobile mounted men, armed with multiple revolvers, with many on the Union side using Spencer repeating rifles…."

Yeah, if was a modern Ranger there's a good few Civil War outfits I wouldn't want my badge associated with.

Pretty much everyone with the word "Partisan" in front, for a start!

Ranger was a company nickname used often in Alabama companies as were scouts and other irregular infantry terms. These units did not operate as irregular units but as normal infantry units.
Clarke, 2nd co D. Mobile so AL 2nd, F co. Marshall Mountaineers 6th co B. Perry Alabama Rangers 8th co A. Butler Rangers 9th co G. Randolph Rangers 13th co E.
I identified 24 other infantry companies with Ranger names including independent and attached to regiments. Other similar nicknames like sharpshooters, foresters and such were used. Cavalry Ranger companies were three.
