…, 150 Years After the War. "HOW MANY PEOPLE alive today can say that their father was a Civil War soldier who shook hands with Abraham Lincoln in the White House? Fred Upham can. Despite sounding like a tall tale and a mathematical impossibility, it's documented truth. Fred's father, William, was a private in the Union Army's Second Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was severely wounded at the First Battle of Bull Run, in 1861, and later personally appointed by President Lincoln to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

My favorite such person to talk about is Mr Harrison Ruffin Tyler, 91, of Sherwood Forest plantation Virginia. He is the grandson of President John Tyler, also a Confederate Congressman. He is also related to President William Henry Harrison and Edmund Ruffin. A nice guy who runs the civil war reenactments at fort Pocahontas VA. link link |

I was a small wee lad at the Pontiac, Mi centennial parade in 1961. My dad bent down, looked me in the eyes and said "You need to see this and you need to remember it." He picked me up so I could see better as a covertable went slowly by carrying one of the oldest men I'd ever seen. A Civil War veteran! Amazing even still as I think back on it… I actually saw one alive! |

I met Mr. Tyler at the Civil War Round Table in San Diego sometime in the '90s. What's scary for me to realize is, that of all the years that have passed since the Civil War ended, I've been alive for more than half of them! |

As a kid I remember the passing of the last 3 vets (also saw the last parade of the SpAm vets in Philadelphia). The last off spring of a CW vet was born in 1939, his father was 91 and his mother 18. |
