I just got back from Florida and have posted the first of several fort visits that I managed to enjoy while there. First up is Fort King, an important supply base during the Seminole Wars. link |

I wonder why the tower would be a different color than the wall? |

Built at a different phase of the reconstruction most likely. Blockhouse probably went up first as it was more "sexy" than the walls. Could also be a different type of wood, but most likely the former reason. Good walkabout, Anton! |

Both are constructed of Southern Yellow Pine. The outer panels of the blockhouse were planks, much like siding, the pales were simply logs stripped of their bark. Thus the sapwood which is a darker color shows on the blockhouses, while on the pales the low-density outer layer of new growth silvers rapidly in the sunlight. Given the intensity of the Florida sun they will all be a silver-gray color very soon |
