As previously mentioned, I've decided to try VR. One VR game I was really interested in was Onward, a realistic tactical FPS. After installing my VR headset, I found my self in a small trailer with a cute little robot, who gave me some game cartridges that let me use a 3D printer to print nerf guns, rockets and digital butterflies. It was really weird being in this totally different place. I talked to the robot, and my dog probably wondered who the hell I was talking to. So I booted up Onwards, doing a small tutorial, it's strange dropping a mag from the gun, and physically picking out a new mag from the vest and putting it in the gun, and pulling back to load the first round. or grabbing behind your back to get out a tablet to get a map. Or taking out a grenade and using your other hand to pull the pin. So I tried a map with 12 enemies on a hydropower dam. It was FREAKY AS HELL, you move forward/backwards with the stick on the right controller(that just looks like a hand when you look at it in VR) But you do all other things with your actual body. so to turn around or look to the left, etc, you physically do it. When I was attacked, if actually kneeled down behind a turbine, and leaned out giving fire back. I did get a bit dizzy when looking up or down stairways, and the damn cord got in the way. In the end, I managed to down 5 out of the 12 before 3 snuck up behind me, and I died. Here's a video of someone who knows what they are doing. YouTube link |

Tried another round, it's strange walking around in a map based in Iraq, seeing parked M1 Abraham tanks in the street. Got attacked by 8 baddies, I fired down the street, dropped my rifle, then dropped my flashbang, I tried to pick up my rifle but picked up the flashbang instead, I pulled the pin and threw it, banged myself, ended up blind. Finally got my rifle up from the ground and reloaded it, and took out the guys that were left. Tried the same map, this time with an M249, you have to open the top and drag the belt over and snap the top down and pull the stick to load it. I met 4 guys down the street, opened up a lively fire, they thew smoke, but that didn't save them. The second group of 4 hears the noise, comes running, but I down them too. So yes all 8 down and I didn't have to reload my 200 round belt. |

Now get yourself a side table and roll a D6 every time you touch a control, 4,5,6 is a success. :) |

The only time I tried VR with my granson's console, I thought the experience was amazing but unfortunately, I felt really nauseous for several hours afterwards. Apparently it affects some people this way which is a shame. DBDD |

Yes, it's partly based on how the game works,(it's particularly if walk in VR games, that's why early VR games generally just teleported you around. It also has to do with the distance between your pupils. |

I am afraid if I run Arma 3 in VR I might not come back :) |

At some movie theatres they offer an immersive Terminator VR game. You wear a vest, gloves and anklets that tell the system where you are *on a real set* in relation to the game world. Of course you have VR goggles on. So in this game you have physical props -- guns and equipment, obstacles and so on you can move and hide behind. They even had air jets on the set that would blast air at you in conjunction with an explosion. Very cool! YouTube link |

I'm probably going to by a "gun" It's basically just a carbon fibre stock, with magnetic cups to attach the hand controllers. But it helps with lining up the sights etc. You can also by a recoil kit for it, but it costs as much as the rest of the stock. So won't do that right away. But the stock is cool. I did a run at a tanker map at night, walking on tanker with NvGs on looked very real with the IR laser sight, sneaking around. |

I tried some Skyrim VR at Quakecon on the UK earlier this year. Really immersive, swinging the controller to hack with an axe, bringing the other one up to block… Unfortunately I was wearing my varifocal glasses, and trying to focus on a screen mere inches from my eyes. I had to look through the bottom portion of the lenses, which meant I was tilting my head back. The chap running the demo kept asking me what I was looking for in the sky. Dragons, I said. I'm looking for Dragons. |

I use VR for flight sim flying in DCS. It's so much more immersive than a flat monitor. |

WOW, I tried my hand at going online playing 4 player COOP. Man, it was epic, playing in a 4 man team, giving each other cover. We were flanked, and the guy holding the flank had to reload, so I turned around to cover him while he reloaded, and let's just say my M249 did an excellent job at giving cover. Another map was a kinda desert village after two rounds were I died fast and only managed 2 kills combined. In the 3rd round, I got up in a second story building and covered the other guys from there, taking down 10 guys. The AI is both dumb and smart, the cover isn't something they seem to understand, they generally attack, attack attack, often over open ground. on the other hand, they do try and cover the attack with smoke and they do a lot of flanking. |
