"If the title of this article means absolutely nothing to you then I wouldn't be surprised as I'm addressing two historic conspiracy theories that have been lain end to end. They have been promoted by the Smith Gallery and Museum in Stirling and reported in the Daily Record. Whether you're a fan of Marshal Ney, Scotland or alternative history; let's enjoy this public domain image together and then, if you'll indulge me, I'd like to eat this myth from nose to tail…" Main page link Amicalement Armand

As my dear old dad used to say, "There are two sorts of people in the world. There are Scots and there are people who wish they were Scots." That's only because we all secretly (or not secretly in my case) want to wear kilts. |

Anyone can wear a kilt. It *does* help if you're built like Adonis (eg most Scots,me etc). |

The Scotsman is mean, as we're all well aware And bony, and blotchy, and covered with hair He eats salty porridge, he works all the day And he hasn't got bishops to show him the way. The English, the English, the English are best! I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest! |

Well Eumulus, if you printed a similar ditty about Jewish people then you would be taken to task for anti semitism and rightly so. No place for racism on this forum even when allegedly and dubiously supposed to be humerous. |

The Scottish Kilt? Invented by Queen Victoria…..and now just exists to sell on Princess St to rich tourists. It takes an Irishman to wear a proper kilt. Plain. None of this tartan clan invention. Seriously though, for either country, for formal dress, there is nothing to beat the full rig head to toe. A great lady puller and not just because they are curious. |

I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest! (no offence taken, of course). Again, quoting from my dad…. "The only good thing to come out of England is the road to Scotland". (and this isn't racism either but akin to the rough humour between two rival football teams). |

"The Scottish Kilt? Invented by Queen Victoria…" While she invented the clan tartans, didn't the kilt come from Scottish troops serving on the continent? The low countries I believe. |
Green Tiger | 29 Nov 2019 2:14 a.m. PST |
I believe (and I could be wrong) that what we currently think of as the kilt – the filibeg (also philabeg) was invented by an English charcoal maker in teh early 18th century as the full kilt (which wraps around the body) was difficult to work in… |
deadhead | 29 Nov 2019 2:50 a.m. PST |
Absolutely. Traditional Highland dress was a much larger and longer piece of material worn over one shoulder and then wrapped around the waist. It could serve as a blanket, a tent or even a handkerchief if you had a really bad cold (OK maybe not all three). Bonny Prince Charlie's men would have frozen at Culloden in a modern "kilt". (Which they did anyway of course). I should have said "popularised by Queen Vic", not that she personally invented it. Even then we do see George IV in a modernish kilt a decade or two earlier.

With 'flesh coloured' tights to conceal his pudgy white legs. The notion of clan tartans was promoted by Colonel David Stewart of Garth and Walter Scott on the occasion of the King's visit to Edinburgh in 1822, when gentry from all corners of the kingdom were exhorted to attend wearing the 'national dress' and astute tailors and outfitters helpfully produced a catalogue of family tartans for the good gentlemen to choose from. Actually, the plaid is belted around the waist first- 'kilted'- and then wrapped oaround the torso. The story of the working dress invented by a Sassencha is of course resisted and resented but certainly the philabeg was being worn militarily by Highland troops in America during the Seven Years War. |

Oh, for goodness´sake..itś hard enough to paint tartans on Highland troops without you lot bletherin' aboot the kilt,or the Highlander's bellows (for the fireplace) and a great turn-on for the ladies at any waddin.. (wedding) An' only Celts of any description have the knack of walking with a kilt on, there's a certain swing to the whole thing..or, to put it another way, "you ain't got that thing if you ain't got no swing.." Watch Scopttish Pipe Bands on You Tube, and you'll get the idea. |
