"Since 1649 local militias have been formed in various districts of New France. The small unit of 40 men, which was excavated in 1649 in Trois-Rivières, was the first of these units. Similar units were formed in 1651 in Quebec and in 1657 in Montréal. In 1673, a decree was issued stating that all suitable men (between 16 and 60 years old) of the various parishes of New France should be grouped into militia companies and serve in wartime. The service in the militia became a duty for everyone. It took a few years for Canadians to internalize the way war was to be waged in the forests of North America…" UT

The small unit of 40 men, which was excavated in 1649 in Trois-Rivières, was the first of these units. Lol. I had to laugh at this translation. The original German article uses the term "ausgehoben" which does indeed mean excavated. However, it also means "lifted up" as in raised. Therefore, the small unit of 40 men was raised in 1649 in Trois-Rivieres. That makes more sense. |
