Hi all,

Quick question.
Did Austrian grenzer battalion in 1809 ever fight formed up, or were they always deployed as skirmishers for their corps?

It is stated, if folklore-ish, that the Austrian hierarchy beat the crap out of the Grenze pre-1805 to force out their wayward mob like tactics into submission as goody-good formed infantry automatons.

>>Quick question.
There appear to be two.

>>Did Austrian grenzer battalion in 1809 ever fight formed up,

They apparently had the ability and [were] drilled to do so.
Apparently at a morale and efficiency cost to the overall establishment.

>> or were they always deployed as skirmishers for their corps?

Not always would have to be the answer. "corps" or Corps?
Their instinctive national/ border troops characteristics remained as hunters and skirmishers. That was their 'corps'.

In a Corps – I'm sure they marched in formed columns.

they could do both – as Austrian line infantry could do as well. It would depend on the tactical circumstances
