I recall a rule book by Warlord games (?) named "Trafalgar" which dealt with age of sail games. Was it any good and how would it compare with Black Sails?

Not a brilliant set, They looked good but had a number of less than wonderful features that should have been picked up before production/ Gabrio, the author of Black Seas, was involved in the genesis of "Trafalgar" and a number of the odd features were in early drafts of BS but fortunately many were sorted out before the final draft was completed.

It's a nice book even if the rules aren't that good and it's useful if you intend to build 1/1200 metal kits.

I think David Manley made some useful rules amends available that corrected some of the problems.

Games Workshop, actually. One of my biggest beefs with it was that almost all the lower "rates", i.e. Frigates, Brigs, Sloops, etc were all lumped into one (the weakest) category of ships. If I remember right…. My copy of the rules passed through my hands very quickly.

I still have my copy, used strictly for the ship building/rigging stuff in the back. The visual examples complement the Langton Guide, or rigging guides like Vols.
