Last month Mr Steve and I enjoyed a very pleasant day exploring some of the historic sites of Dorset which provided an eclectic mix of historic places and subjects to visit.

Part of our journeying took us to the Dorchester Keep Military Museum where given the time constraints we focused on the Napoleonic items in the collection.

In addition we visited the Hod Hill and Maiden Castle Hill Forts, the scenes of two attacks by Vespasian and his II Augusta Legion during the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD.

Great travelogue, thank you. As always, you have made me jolly homesick.

If there's a Brit alive who wargames and hasn't walked Maiden Castle then it really should be on everyone's bucket list. A breathtaking feat of iron age earthwork engineering. Scaling up and down those massive slopes is a real eye opener of what was possible and all hand dug over time. I found it simply stunning and nigh on impregnable when properly defended. Little wonder the Romans took it – they would have been the only people capable of doing so. I rate it as a genuine wonder.
The Keep museum also is a great find and has great views from the top.

If you`re in Dorchester, a must see is the Roman Town House – admission free and the guide which you buy from the County Council office nearby costs a silly £1.00 GBP !
