"I haven't been drunk enough" option would've gathered a bit of support I reckon. |

There is brewery in Ohio that makes gluten free…some of the best beer I've had. I've tried it in the past, nasty stuff, but this brewery is making beers that rival other more known local places. When I went there for the first time, I did not realize it was a gluten free place until I was on my second beer, rollingmillbc.com |

Seriously?!?!?! This gluten-free BS has gotten waaaay out of control. It started because some people, a microscopically small percentage of the population, allegedly had an allergy to wheat/gluten. Think about it, wheat has been the basis of the food chain for centuries and suddenly some people develop an allergy? It could not have been genetically inherited trait. If you couldn't eat wheat you probably didn't eat at all, and we know how well that works. You either become a Victoria's Secret model or die. The allergy to wheat/gluten would eventually vanish from the gene pool, wouldn't it? |

Speaking as someone who has it in the family (and has it himself), it's just under 1% of the population who has some sort of wheat/gluten intolerance. It's a recessive gene, so it can linger on in the population quite easily; neither of my parents have it, but they're both gene carriers. My sister's kids don't have it, but that's because her husband doesn't have it in the family, but their kids may. Also, for a lot of people it's a late onset thing. I had no significant symptoms until I was over 40, well past the point of passing on those genes. My sister was in her mid 30s before she was diagnosed, and likewise already had her kids by then. Basically, it's like any other autoimmune "disease"; at some point due to a genetic/environmental trigger, your body decides it's had enough. For me, it developed not long after I had my gallbladder out. My personal theory is that having constant bile in my digestive tract damaged my intestinal walls enough to the point where the proteins in gluten caused an immune response, and once that started happening, it was all down hill from there. For others, they never really get diagnosed, because their symptoms are fairly minor, or they pass it off as something else. Usually some sort of IBS, which they just live with. I'm pretty lucky. My symptoms don't include any of the worst migraine-like symptoms, fuzzy headed-ness, nausea or the like. I just have to use the toilet frequently and urgently within a few hours of having gluten and that lasts for a day or three. If my sister hadn't been diagnosed, I probably would have kept passing it off as a side effect of gallbladder removal for a lot longer. |
