Although I have the original Wings of War balloon busting, cards only set, I've never tried a balloon busting scenario, in part because the visual of the planes going against flat pieces of cardboard is just…blah. But I'm too cheap to invest in even the Shapeways products out there. Besides, how hard would it be to make a sausage and attach "ropes" to it?

I've got some ideas, but I wondered if anyone else in TMP land has attempted to make their own versions?

I recall a photo of a D-Day game that used the Kinder Egg candy packaging as a basis for barrage balloons-- that was in 1/300, though, and probably a bit too small for the Wings of War planes. Something similar might be attempted using lightweight foam as a core and adding details as desired.

It might also be worth checking some of the paper model sites-- there are some very large zeppelins done in this medium and there might be some other craft that could be scaled to your needs.

I got a pair of the hard foam "eggs" from Hobby Lobby, cut the fins from packing foam, glued them on and painted them a dusky gray. Hung a basket from below and ran a wire through them. Not so heavy that they couldn't be placed on a stick. We used them for flying using Red Baron.

55th Division,
I went to the link. Good looking models. I didn't see any pricing – are the downloads free? Can you just download the info and save it and then download to a 3-D printer later, or do you have to download the plans directly to a 3D printer from the website? I'm new to the idea and don't have a printer yet. Another thought: are there folks with 3D printers who would print models like this for me for a fee on their machines if I could download these plans? some very interesting possibilities. Thanks, Tom

I started carving one from a wood dowel a long time ago, before suitable models were not available.

Never finished it though.

Seems like that should work, especially if you choose a softer wood than the dowel I was using for the project.

Anybody know the general scale dimensions for these things? I don't need exact, just close enough.

The models from 55th division are free. You can download them to your PC, run them through 'slicer' software, and then send the resulting file to a 3d printer.

I have printed out the allied balloon -- it is a nice model. I printed the model as is with supports – the supports were a pain to remove and the model is heavy as it has internal 'infill'. If I was to print the model again, I would cut it in 1/2, print each half in 'vase mode' to get two hemispheres, and glue the halves together.

Also note that there is no basket with ropes. You have to model these yourself!

Red Eagle Miniatures sell expanded foam kits.

If you are looking for a bit cheaper, he sold me a miscast for roughly half price a few years ago. Worth a try. All I needed to do was fill the holes and seemed much easier than starting from scratch.
