So just to explain I have the first 8th Edition Space Marines codex from 2018ish I believe?

I've made a number of army lists based on that codex. I play pretty casually and I'm hoping I can still use these lists.

I have not looked at the new Space Marines codex yet.

Is it really necessary to buy yet another physical codex? Did they change points values or seriously nerf or buff major things? Is it enough to just go online and get a free PDF of just the army listings pages?

I am happy to spend money on GW stuff generally but I'm really annoyed buy yet another Space Marine codex when I was just becoming comfortable with the previous one!

So I just went on some 40k gamer forums and I found one fellow who back in August was nice enough to generate a downloadable list of all the points changes for the Space Marines lists.

So I downloaded it and it looks like maybe 15-20 percent of the listings got new point costs. So as far as points goes I'm up to date with the newest physical codex book.

Is there any other reason to buy the $40 USD book besides the new points?

I mean I love GW's models and games but I don't play this game on a tournament level where I need to know the latest tweak and twist of every single thing.

And I really do feel duped when GW keeps doing this and then you find out that it's like a college text book, where they literally only change a few things around from the previous edition and then they charge you for the entire new book at full price.

That's one reason I quit buying codexes after 3rd edition…

I remember buying the Legion Of The Damned "codex". What a waste of money…

Well…no….if you are happy with what you have and the rules edition for which you have designed your forces….then freeze it there and just play that. Bit of a discussion on this subject on Twitter the last few days.

It depends on how you play, and who you play with. It's not like the GW inquisitors will raid your rec room to punish you and your friends for using an older version of the rules.

Even at conventions, there are groups of people who play with various versions of the 40k ruleset – RT and 2ed being two I see fairly regularly. This is similar to the way people prefer certain editions of D&D, or certain formats of M:tG.

I personally think pre-codex-creep 3rd was the cleanest playing version of 40k, and would be happy to play that version with a friend or two.

I've said this for years, that no one controls how you play, but you. Just play with friends, don't bother with the edition.

@joedog – I wouldn't be too sure about the GDubs Inquisitors…

This is the kind of thing I think about when people say they want support for a system.

Here's something I found when trying to look up some wargear options for a codex I don't currently have: wahapedia.ru

Wikipedia like thing for the current rules should you need them.

No one expects the GW Inquisition. That's one of their advantages.

Ironically, this is what GW thinks the player base actually wants. 8th edition is designed to cater to the tournament crowd, with frequent balancing updates and tweaks to keep things "fresh". With 8th edition being wildly successful, it looks like they made the "right" decision.

That being said, they've lost my business. I can't stand 8th edition.

I've always assumed that the GW Codex fetish was simply another avenue for selling product. It's ridunkulous.

Do you want the stats for the Primaris Vanguard marines introduced in the Shadowspear box? (assuming you didn't buy Shadowspear)

I recently got back into 40k after a near 20 year gap as the gaming group I joined play 3rd/4th edition so I could buy new GW products and play a ruleset I was familiar with. Unless you are playing in store or at tournaments find the version you like and go for it.

I can't really help you with your quandary, although I would like to. I honestly still play 2nd Edition. I liked 3rd ed when it first came out but did not like the codexes at all. 4th ed made me twitch so I gave up at that point and just went back to what I enjoyed.

Der Krieg Geist29 Jul 2021 11:27 p.m. PST

I really think the game works best with just the army lists in the 2nd ed box set and some reasonable lists created for the armies that arrived after 2nd ed.
I also know I am in the smallest minority, so there is that. :D
