"The complex heliborne raid occurring yesterday killed the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The long sought after terror leader's death marks a milestone for the U.S. campaign to defeat the Islamic State, particularly at a time when the U.S. has precipitously drawn down its forces in Syria. What should we make of al-Baghdadi's death? The death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may be a bigger victory for the U.S. than the defeat of the Islamic State. Killing the Islamic State's leader obviously offers a hard-won victory for the U.S. coalition which has chased the elusive leader for years. There had been more than a dozen claims of his demise in previous years and this decisive action will finally bring a close to this elusive terrorist leader's legend…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

You heard of the chimera? Bin Laden's death didn't improve matters either. You want to stop terrorism, attack it militarily, sure, but also look at the causes & try to give people no reason to become radicals. The long term solution is the best. |

Amen, though unfortunately long-term thinking is the preserve of very few governments, particularly elected ones! The least worst outcome is that the leadership succession turns nasty and they end up killing each other briefly. |

The least worst outcome is that the leadership succession turns nasty and they end up killing each other briefly. We can hope & it's not impossible – The People's Front of Judea, and the "splitters"- but far better to deal root & branch. I would refer to our American allies the great success the British had in stamping out Communism during the Malayan Emergency. Carrot as well as stick. |

@Ochoin: I think you meant the hydra. Cut off one head, and two more grow in it's place. But yeah. Not a whole lot of good, other than making DAESH figure out a new Glorious Leader (which gives us a chance to find and ID them via signals intelligence). A distinct downside is that the new Glorious Leader will be someone we don't know, which will probably change operation patterns. |

Damn. Hydra it is. I don't think the position of leader of ISIS needs to come with a good pension plan as I'm sure the relentless chaps of US Intelligence will figure it out. Of course the new position of martyr carries its own prestige and dangers for the West. |

Take out the money men & the means to access that money and these groups shrink into the little criminal groups that they are… |

Letting them live doesn't help either, always take out leadership. |
