I was researching Bob Thoms, the Marine sergeant who led the assault on the Dong Ba tower, and accidentally came across this Times article.

It starts by trying to identify the famous shell shocked Marine photo'd by McCullin, but moves on to other well known pictures.

What got to me though was the story of the tank, the wounded and the medic with the octopus on his helmet. Sadly it convincingly contradicts everything we thought we "knew" about the characters involved..so often reinforced in books and video interviews….and again convincingly so!

Since found a much more exhaustive analysis of the famous photo. Dose present the arguments in a very balanced fashion but really concludes that the wounded marine with the IV going in did not make it and is not the chap who appears in videos and is featured in the book Hue 68.

If nothing else, take a look at some of McCullin's series of pics never before published. In B & W about half way through the article. How big is that bazooka!

Those photos, with the octopus-wearing medic, inspired me to run a Cthulhu-inspired game set during the Vietnam War. Good times.
