I don't have any Roman figures but I understand you can play with other factions. I'm really hoping for a game with rules for individuals/heroes for a Trojan War scenario I'm working on.

I heard that you roll an awful lot of dice.

I might be wrong.

New game. 50% off. Just think about why that might be. It's not because it's brilliant and selling well.

The reviews I have read were not favorable, but half off figs might be worthwhile.

Only get it if others in your group has it. That way you can go over the rules together. Price is not everything. Being able to play it is.

Played a demo, it's a "skirmish" game designed to compete head to head with something like SAGA.

It was ok, but it is trying to emulate tactics that would apply to much larger units to a small skirmish. It had that SAGA my blob hits your blob, but my 4 guys are "Pike" or heavy Roman legionnaire. In that scale, we are dudes with sword or spear and have armor or don't.

So for my money I would much rather play a man to man skirmish game or a true ancients battle game.

For people that like SAGA or similar games, it has some different activation mechanics that you might find interesting.

Please do not waste your money on SPQR. It is terrible. I literally played two games this morning with my gaming buddies before we took a break for lunch. Over lunch we decided collectively that the game is so fundamentally flawed that we're going to shelve it permanently. It truly feels like more of an alpha/beta phase of a game in development than a finished product. Units are not point costed in a balanced manner, the combat mechanic heavily favors large numbers over actual combat prowess, and the rules, even after their FAQ errata, are so vague or poorly worded that I'm not sure that they answered more questions than they created!! As an example, the FAQ that was released fundamentally changed the combat mechanic when it stated that only one model could now be in base to base contact with another. You know a game was not well thought out or executed when it has to change a fundamental aspect of itself shortly after its release. I could go on but suffice it to say that if your looking for a fun, balanced, skirmish level ancient game save your money and look elsewhere. The best thing about this game is how pretty the rules book looks. If only the rules were as pretty as the book…….

Depends on what you want out of the game.

If you have played and like GW games with all the loads of dice chucking, well this game has that. 2 dice per man is typical which means you can roll 20 dice for a 10 man unit.

There are saves.

The rules are not tight. This game is designed so that like minded players can line up some figures and play out a game or two in an evening. It probably works well as a convention game or a club night game with several players per side.

Basically, if you and your buddies are pretty laid back gamers and can figure out the gray areas without a fist fight, this game might do the trick for you.

If you and your buddies need a "tight" set of rules and "point costs" and stuff like that, then you may wish to look elsewhere.

You dont want it. This game dosnt work. Second FAQ ( first was joke ) change core rules, because it was perfectly playtested. It is the worst copy of Age of Sigmar you cam imagine. But if it starter box for 50%, it's worth much more in minis.

Decebalus08 Nov 2019 8:47 a.m. PST

And isnt the trick of SPQR, that warlord sells his old models in half sized packages? So buying for half prize may not be cheap.

Wait till its 75% off and then you may be paying retail price for the miniatures.
