Hi Markconz, We made a few games with the rules, overall very satisfying, I'm not a Napoleonic specialist, but they gave a very good feel and representation of manoeuvres (distinction are done between the different drills through the years and countries ej: linear/mixte order etc) and fight. The outcomes of firefighting and charges are elegantly treated (the charges results with one die throw!) The contemporary manoeuvres and deployment are encourage by the rules (supporting lines for exemple). They offer you a complete tool within the book with an extensive armies lists section including minors nations or factions (Vendée or Two Sicilies!). You'l find also an annexe full of special rules for fortifications, night fighting, generals abilities, rockets even horses quality etc..! Now on the downside: The representation of the units could maybe a bit odd for some people, average infantry units are four bases on two lines (yes even British or British trained) and cavalry two bases. The turn sequence is not clearly presented so you've got consulting the pages throughout the book (this is my experience maybe I've been too long without playing and reading rules) You've got a QRS who's quite helpful. French players seems very happy and there's a forum to support the rules where the author Hervé Caille is very active and helping. Overall Bataille Empire made me play again Napoleonics after quite a long time. Hope it helps P.S: I hope soon post a game report. |

In my opinion, it is a mediocre set of rules. There is nothing original or especially creative. In fact, this ruleset includes all the typical features you can find in other Napoleonic rulesets: the typical orders, command points, the usual sequence of play, typical morale tests, and so on. Their treatment is very similar to the systems used by other rulesets. And many characteristics and procedures are not historically accurate or they are outdated. I have read the rulebook and I have played a couple of games. It doesn't work for me. |

Napoleonic wargames are my favourite. I have played lots of games and used dozens of rulesets. Nearly all Napoleonic wargame rules are rooted in outdated conceptions and old unfounded myths, especially regarding formations, skirmishers, national characteristics, command and control, and so on. And most rulesets use unrealistic systems (IGO/UGO sequence of play, simplistic abstractions about skirmishers and combat procedures, stereotyped tactical doctrines, …) Due to those reasons, I do not have any favourite ruleset. Perhaps General d'Armee and Over the Hills (2nd edition) are good options regarding fast play games. Both rulesets are far from perfect but they are better developed concerning game mechanisms, procedures and historical accuracy. It is my opinion. |

If the BE rules generate some renewed interest in Napoleonics, that would be a good thing. My troops have been in there boxes for way too long. There are a lot of ADLG gamers in my area, so maybe some of them will try it out. |
