Really? Banana Catsup (I believe that's how it's spelled in the Philippines) earns a place on TMP? Oooooh Kaaaaaay. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

"During World War II, Maria was a captain in Marking's Guerrillas, a group of Filipinx soldiers who fought alongside the United States against the Japanese." Well, yes. And I'd be interested in any sources that describe her participation in any of the fighting "alongside the US against the Japanese". So far I have not seen any accounts of her participation in combat. It seems what she is best known for is coming up with powdered food from soy and rice bran that could be placed in bamboo stalks, as a means of sneaking life-sustaining nutrition to inmates in Japanese PoW and concentration camps. Not that any of that is a criticism. Only observation. Any army will have officers who work in supply, or research. Many have worn higher ranks than Captain and served their country by ensuring food supplies. But neither her service as a captain in the Guerrillas, nor her rather ingenious approach to aiding those in Japanese captivity, are related to her having "invented Banana Ketchup" … I'm not dis'ing the lady. I'm just reacting to the OP. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

Mark 1 Better to just admit that you went off half-cocked on this one. The OP was just quoting the title of an article (note the white box); if you click on the link, you will see it's a food website. The mention of banana ketchup is merely a reflection of this, and not a claim that it had a causal relationship to her saving lives during the war. BTW, my wife was born there, and she says it's normally spelled "ketchup". MH |
